When you think of popular Euro trip destinations, there are a few countries that often come to mind… France, Spain, Italy, Greece. But anyone who has been to Portugal knows the idyllic country deserves a spot at the top of your dream destination list. After visiting the country for the first time in 2022, I was so obsessed that I convinced my now-husband to return for more adventures the following summer. Since then, we got engaged in Porto at the city’s stunning Yeatman Hotel.
Just west of Spain, Portugal is a small but mighty country with something for every type of traveler. For the history buff, visit the country’s capital city of Lisbon and walk the hilly streets while touring UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the Tower of Belém or the Pena Palace in Sintra. For a beach vacation, the Algarve region offers a slower, resort-town atmosphere with sandy shores and picturesque clifftop views. And for wine lovers with an interest in all things port, a trip to Porto’s Douro Valley to visit the city’s beautiful mosaic-style architecture and ancient port cellars and vineyards is a must.
But with a wide range of Portugal possibilities (not to mention hot summer temperatures), it can be hard to put together an ideal packing list. Luckily, I’ve got you covered with some help from Banana Republic. From breezy dresses and comfortable sandals to the perfect beach tote and an array of light linens, here’s our selection of the best pieces from Banana Republic’s summer collection to build your perfect Portuguese vacation wardrobe.
What to pack for:
For the city trip
Wherever you’re visiting, getting your bearings on a city tour is always a smart starting point for a trip, especially if it’s your first time there. And in a buzzing capital city like Lisbon, it’s easy to get lost in the surrounding wonders. Visit historical landmarks like Belém Tower or enjoy sky-high views of the city from the top of the Santa Justa Lift. Just an hour outside of Lisbon, explore the colorful town of Sintra and enjoy sweeping views from the stone walls of the Moorish Castle.
But keep in mind it will be hot. Whether you’re venturing out on a day trip excursion or indulging in traditional pastel de nata while roaming the city streets, you need breathable, comfortable clothing that works for all-day wear—and ideally won’t show sweat. For this, linen is always a good idea. From cargo-style shorts to shift dresses, you can’t go wrong with pieces made of the lightweight material in the heat. Accessorize your linen or cotton look with an easy-access crossbody bag and a durable pair of walking shoes, like these stylish Mary Jane espadrilles in place of your traditional sneaker.
