The launch of these new audio and video features on X comes after Musk confessed that there are no more great social media apps currently.
Only a few weeks after Twitter’s former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Elon Musk renamed the social media platform to X, he has now announced the coming of new features to the app. Some of the expected features are audio and video calls but the specific date of their launch remains unknown to members of the public.
According to Musk, these new features will be compatible with Android, iOS, PC, and Mac.
Just like other social media apps like Facebook and Instagram that have these features enabled, the calls will not need to be made with any phone number. Once these features go live on the X app, premium subscribers will be allowed to record videos for as long as 2 hours.
Some other benefits of the features are improved live broadcasting quality from mobile, an immersive video player in Android and iOS, and speaking in and co-hosting a Space on the web with support for millions of participants on Spaces.
Per his tweet on the X app, “Video & audio calls coming to X: – Works on iOS, Android, Mac & PC – No phone number needed- X is the effective global address book …That set of factors is unique.”
Twitter designer Andrew Conway had previously hinted at the launch of these features sometime in July when he shared a screenshot of the features in action. Based on this screenshot, the audio and video call options were seen on the top left of the DM screen. While the features are still much-anticipated, they further underscore Musk’s effort to make Twitter (now X) the “everything app.”

It is general knowledge that Musk perceives himself as a close rival to Mark Zuckerberg, Meta CEO. This became more evident when the latter launched Threads a few months ago and Musk went ballistic about copyright infringement.
The Twitter owner claimed that the newly launched Meta app is an imitation of Twitter, adding that Zuckerberg employed former Twitter employees who were privy to confidential information while at the firm. In addition, Twitter had threatened to take Meta to court if it did not address some of the concerns that the social media microblogging site raised.
The launch of these new audio and video features on X comes after Musk confessed that there are no more great social media apps currently. Supposedly, these features may have been introduced to make X the “great social network” of this time.
“The sad truth is that there are no great “social networks” right now. We may fail, as so many have predicted, but we will try our best to make there be at least one,” Musk explained.
Markedly, TikTok recently introduced text-based posts to its existing audio and video features, showcasing how much of close competition social media platforms now have for one another.
