At Money Marketing Interactive this week (17 October), we heard a lot about how technology can help advisers do their jobs more efficiently. Artificial intelligence was a big theme throughout the day.
Speaking on one of the panels, Capital Asset Management chief executive Alan Smith said he believes that, from a financial planning practice viewpoint, the implications of AI adoption are “entirely game-changing”.
Those who do not embrace tech, including AI, are likely to be left behind.
Another speaker, FTRC director Ian McKenna, insisted advisers need to embrace technology and data in order to serve the next generation of clients.
“If you don’t get your data in good order, I guarantee your project will fail,” he said.
We asked some advice professionals attending our flagship event whether they consider technology to be a threat or an opportunity to their business.
The answer was resoundingly “opportunity”, although some warned that it could be a threat to certain branches of the profession.

Antony George co-founder Lewis Byford said tech is “very much an opportunity for our business”.
“For those that aren’t actually embracing technology, they can be the individuals that will be left behind,” he warned.
Financial planner Jamie Kyte seconded Byford. He went as far as to say it is an opportunity for “all people in the financial planning world”.
“AI is going to make our lives a lot easier and allow us to focus on what we like doing the most, which is working with my clients and helping them.”
Openwork Partnership development manager Robyn Allen said it is “absolutely an opportunity”, and “not just because of the social media side”.
“It will allow us to improve processes, client journeys, adviser journeys, and make everybody’s journey a fantastic experience,” she said. “It is the way forward.”
