Airbnb Recreated Shrek's Swamp in Scotland and It Actually Looks Quite Lovely

It’s now been more than 20 years since the release of the first Shrek movie, but children and grown-ups alike still can’t get enough of the funniest ogre in cinema, who once shared a glimpse of his daily routine at home accompanied by the unforgettable rhythms of Smash Mouth. Now some lucky travelers are reliving that on-screen moment this weekend while they stay at Shrek’s Swamp via Airbnb.

For a limited time, reservations for a recreation of Shrek’s Swamp opened on October 13 (for the unbeatable price of $0); it includes two nights in the swamp for three people, although guests will be responsible for their own travel to and from Scotland (even if they come from far, far away). The stay is taking place this weekend from October 27 to 29. As part of this promotion, Airbnb is making a one-time donation to HopScotch Children’s Charity, a long-established NGO that provides some of Scotland’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged children with nurturing and dynamic holiday trips.

It isn’t the most glamorous bathroom, but it does have its own personality.

According to Airbnb’s press release, Shrek won’t be there to welcome guests (all the better, because he doesn’t appreciate visitors), so his best friend Donkey will serve as a guide to visitors in this a bucolic setting in the Scottish Highlands. Donkey will lead them through a number of different experiences over the course of two days—sampling the parfaits that Shrek loves, telling stories around a campfire, and indulging in a feast worthy of an ogre at dinner time. Days start with freshly made waffles, the perfect breakfast before a day exploring the peaceful and beautiful countryside nearby.

Thanks to a remarkable attention to detail, guests will immerse themselves in the Shrek fantasy when they stay in his rustically charming home. Plants cover and surround each building, there are many “Beware of Ogre!” signs, and a DreamWorks moon is carved into the headboard. When night falls, you can curl up in the green armchair where Donkey naps, make yourself a martini complete with an eyeball garnish, light candles made of ogre earwax, and plug in a night-light in the form of an inflated puffer fish. The outhouse may not be the most glamorous bathroom, but it is unique and memorable. You can borrow the bucket that Shrek uses if you’d like but you aren’t required to take a mud shower.

Here’s hoping Airbnb will make Shrek’s Swamp bookable again soon.
