The playful, quirky aesthetic harks back to our childhoods, an idea JR was so adamant about bringing to life that he’s gone as far as to include a disco ball (with its own lighting setting) for late-night dancing. With a sophisticated sound system integrated into each carriage section, it’s clear that music plays a big role in L’Observetoire’s design. A curated collection of music tracks—all handpicked by JR—are available on vinyl.
There’s an air of fun, but there’s an air of mystery, too. Guests are asked to keep an eye out for cleverly hidden clues as part of an onboard treasure hunt that ultimately leads to a prize—infusing the journey with a sense of curiosity and discovery.
One of the carriage’s most beautiful features is the woodwork and marquetry throughout the corridors, adorned with photographs by the artist. JR worked alongside Atelier Philippe Alleman to pay homage to the train’s elegant use of cabinetry since 1997. But now, new motifs are on display: an urban cityscape with JR standing on a rooftop, and mountain peaks that reflect the ride through the Tyrols and Alps.

The interiors flow across several micro-environments and spreads of beautiful French parquetry—from the bedroom and adjoining bathroom (spot the mosaic hand on the shower floor), to the low-slung cocoon-like daybed to a convertible dining table that expands to seat five friends. It’s all incredibly social and experimental, intending to charm, engage, and relax.
L’Observatoire will join the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, A Belmond Train, in March 2025. The stay will include all meals with a sommelier’s choice of wine and unlimited soft drinks, 24-hour butler service, private in-cabin dining, transfers to and from the train, bespoke amenities, and further special surprise touches from JR. L’Observatoire is now open for bookings.
