Designer fashion label Erdem has joined Burberry and Mulberry in throwing its weight behind a Mail campaign to get rid of a controversial tourist tax for shoppers.
Philippa Nixon, chief executive of the London fashion house, said the tax cut would encourage tourists to shop in the UK rather than elsewhere in Europe.
Erdem’s floral dresses have been worn by the Princess of Wales and celebrities including Kylie Minogue.
Nixon told The Mail on Sunday: ‘London is the capital of creative expression and we should be encouraging the world to visit.’
Brexit led to the then-Chancellor Rishi Sunak scrapping a 20 per cent VAT refund for overseas shoppers in 2021.
Nixon said the move ‘truly had catastrophic implications to big and small brands alike’.
Marks & Spencer and Harrods are among 150 businesses signing a letter to Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, organised by hotelier Sir Rocco Forte.
The Mail’s Scrap The Tourist Tax campaign has also been backed by a cross-party group of MPs.
