Polestar 5 revealed: The electric Grand Tourer for those with very deep pockets

Polestar has revealed its new Grand Tourer EV that's now on sale: The Polestar 5 is the flagship car from the Swedish brand and produces up to 884hp

Fresh out of Sweden comes the Polestar 5 – a four-door performance Grand Tourer aiming to deliver slick, Scandi electric driving to high-end spenders.

The emergence of the 5 brings the EV brand’s total line-up of models to four – just a year on from the Polestar 3 and 4 taking Polestar from a one trick pony to a multi-vehicle brand.

Revealed today in Munich, it measures in at five-meter long and showcases bold looks.

And to prove that not all EVs are soulless, its potent electric drivetrain can churn out a whopping 884hp and sprint from 0-to-60mph in just 3.1 seconds.

Combining the Swedish brand’s design language, cutting-edge tech and recycled materials, Polestar’s CEO Michael Lohscheller calls the 5 a ‘guiding star for the industry and the perfect Polestar flagship’.

But with a range-top model comes a hefty price tag; the Polestar 5 starts from just under £90,000, and those wanting the first Performance Launch Edition will need to splash more than six figures.

Polestar has revealed its new Grand Tourer EV that’s now on sale: The Polestar 5 is the flagship car from the Swedish brand and produces up to 884hp

Polestar says that aviation was the primary inspiration for the 5, with aerodynamics taking precedent, with a taut surface stretching over ‘an aerodynamic wing-like profile with Kamm-style tail’, a low nose and a close relationship between wheel and bonnet, and Gloss black or Shade cladding that runs along the lower section of the doors reduced the visual height of the car.

The rear of the EV has a specially designed aero-efficient lightbar with a rear vent detail and integrated rear diffuser to improve airflow which, when combined with the flush frameless glass and retractable door handles, results in a drag coefficient (Cd) of just 0.24 for the 5 Dual Motor.

Underpinning the Polestar 5 is a brand new, lightweight, rigid, bespoke, aluminum platform that forms the basis of the Polestar Performance Architecture (PPA).

Polestar says that the 5 has a torsional rigidity higher than that of a two-seat supercar.

One key design feature to flag up is that, like its Polestar 4 sister model, the 5 doesn’t have a rear view mirror. Instead it has the same digital rear view mirror and a virtual rear window.

This could prove to be a marmite feature for buyers.

The interior has been designed to make sure that rear space isn’t lost, with the rear header structure moved backwards behind the rear seat occupants’ heads.

The 5 has the largest panoramic glass roof on any Polestar so far, so back passengers enjoy a light-filled and spacious journey.

Polestar says that the 4+1 seat GT has ‘equal focus for driver and passengers’ and is predominantly designed as a four-seater, even though you can raise the armrest to create a fifth seat. Because of a cut-out in the battery, which Polestar dub the ‘foot garage’, there’s extra floor space for rear passengers.

Front seats have a low hip-point and supportive bolstering, rear seats share a low central armrest and even come with heating, massage functions and ventilation. You can individually recline them for maximum comfort as well.

If needed the rear armrest can be pulled up to create a fifth seat, and Polestar says that rear room hasn't been compromised thanks to the virtual rear view mirror and window

With its admiral sustainable ethos, Polestar has created a car with an interior made from natural fibres and recycled materials: the seatbacks are made from BComp (natural fibre composite), there’s ampliTex bio-based carbon-fibre alternatives (also flax) and a different kind of BComp composite used in the doors, and a lightweight PET in the luggage compartments.

Weight saving, and good for the planet, these materials are used in conjunction with recycled fishing nets and waste materials such as carpets, and more recycled PET to ensure the interior is a highly-sustainable space.

The driver gets a nine-inch display mounted directly to the electrically adjustable steering column so that the display is always positioned in line of sight, there’s a 9.5-inch head-up display and a central 14.5-inch portrait centre display screen for all to use.

As with all Polestars, the 5 comes with Google built-in, and there are four dynamic customisable tiles and up to six user functions that can be placed directly on the home screen for dedicated user shortcuts.

Bowers & Wilkins 10-speaker or 21-speaker audio systems are available, and combined with Active Road Noise Cancellation for world-class audio.

The SmartZone (which houses sensors, radar and forward-facing parking camera) works with Pilot Assist to deliver a huge range of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to keep you safe.

The Dual motor Launch Edition produces 748hp while the Performance Launch Edition produces 884hp. This will see the cars cover the 0-62mph sprint in just 3.9 and 3.2 seconds respectively, and reach a top speed off 150mph

How fast is this GT?

There are big expectations on the Swedish EV brand to deliver impressive stats when they launch new cars – and buyers won’t be disappointed by the Polestar 5’s performance.

The Dual motor Launch Edition produces 748hp while the Performance Launch Edition produces 884hp.

This will see the cars cover the 0-to-62mph sprint in just 3.9 and 3.2 seconds respectively, and reach a top speed of 150mph.

Despite this range is still impressive with the Dual motor managing 416 miles on a single charge and the Performance version managing 351 miles.

The 800V lithium-ion battery – the first of its kind on a Polestar vehicle – can ultra-rapid charge up to 350kW on a suitable charger.

That allows you to top up from 10 to 80 per cent charge in 22 minutes. And the the C-pillar has a handy external charging indicator.

The Polestar 5 Dual motor Launch Edition costs £89,500 while the Performance Launch edition costs from £104,900, making it very much a luxury EV

You can pick from six colour choices, including two matte paint options – Storm (dark grey) and Magnesium (silver).

Head of exterior design, Nahum Escobedo, says: ‘It was a dream to design Polestar Precept, and even more satisfying to see it realised as a production reality with Polestar 5.

‘I can’t wait to see customers have as much fun with this car as we had creating it.’
