B&M, Iceland, Lidl and New Look stores close across Britain by end of month

These are the B&M, Iceland, Lidl and New Look stores that will have shut down across the country by the end of the month.

As energy bills soar and the highstreet stores struggle with building conditions, half a dozen sites are set to close their doors for good within weeks.

While some are set to be replaced with other stores, others are set to leave a hole for local shoppers.

B&M will lose two stores this month, while Iceland and New Look are set to close one and Lidl will close two.

It comes after a raft of closures across the industry – with almost 50 shutting their doors for good every day last year, according to the Centre for Retail Research.

This was up by almost half on the year before.

B&M is closing one store this month, in Bolton’s Burnden Retail Park.

Its doors will shut for good on May 24, with the store directing punters to another outlet complete with a garden centre less than a mile away.

They are also closing another store in Widnes, Cheshire – although this will be replaced by a ‘bigger and better home’ less than a mile down the road.

The current store will close on Wedneday May 17, with the new outlet opening on the following Saturday, May 20.

The company said: ‘We apologise for any inconvenience caused while we bring you a bigger and better B&M store.’

But there’s good news for customers, with B&M announcing a number of openings over the next few months.

After a few opened last year as well, the number of B&M stores across the UK now stands at more than 700.

Frozen food giant Iceland will also close a branch in Flint, Wales – with another in Beccles, Suffolk going next month.

The supermarket chain – which has more than 1,000 stores alongside The Food Warehouse – says this is part of a continual review of stores they own.

Iceland has expanded by nearly 200 stores in the last ten years but recorded an operating loss of £4million for the six months up to September.

That month its boss Richard Walker warned it had been forced to shelve new store openings as it dealt with a £20million increase in its energy bills.

Mr Walker, who took over from his father, Malcolm, in 2018, said soaring energy prices, wage inflation and labour shortages had left Iceland facing its worst crisis in more than half a century.

The Flintshire outlet will shut its doors on May 27 while Suffolk shoppers will lose their branch on June 17.

Lidl will also be shutting down two shops this month.

Both – on Sturry Road, Canterbury and Forton Road, Gosport, in Hampshire – will go on Sunday May 28.

The poor condition of the building in Canterbury has made it unfit for purpose.

And they are leaving the Hampshire location – which has been in place for 25 years – as they target newer sites.

Staff are to be given new jobs in other Lidl stores.

Cut-price clothing retailer New Look is also set to let go of its store in Newlands Shopping Centre, Witham on May 18.

The Essex town will be added to the draft of seven stores already closed this year.

These included shops in Bimingham, Trowbridge and Coventry.

“We are supporting colleagues and we are looking to accommodate the team into local stores where possible,’ a New Look spokesperson told The Sun.

“We have enjoyed being part of the local community and would like to thank all our customers for shopping with us.”
