Where to Travel This Spring for the Last Bit of Ski Season, Film Festivals, or Jazz Celebrations

The best places to go this spring celebrate that long-awaited moment when the winter finally releases its grasp on the Northern Hemisphere, and the world seems to open itself up again, freed as we are from our big puffy jackets and thermal leggings—which means we’re left with more valuable space in our carry-ons, creating more room for souvenirs from wherever we may go. This selection of five destinations, inspired by our list of the Best Places to Go in 2026, make for perfect long weekends from nearly anywhere in the United States. Who wants to close out the week in Guadalajara drinking the finest tequila on earth, or eating through the buzzing dining scene of Chicago? And of course, if you’re game for a longer stay, the waves of Hawaii beckon, where a heritage hotel marks its grand return; and the mountains of Montana are perfect for going off-grid, especially at one of the hottest new hotels in the country.

For even more travel inspiration, read our 2026 lists of the Best Places to Go in the United States, North America and the Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania; as well as this year’s list of the Best Places to Eat.

Go in spring for: sports teams, artistic developments, and hiking in spring

Three words: Portland Rose Festival. This year, the iconic flower fest kicks off on May 22 with an opening night event complete with fireworks; signature events like the Bloom Tour and CityFair begin on the same day. The city’s welcome mat is getting a big upgrade too: In early 2026, Portland International Airport, acclaimed for its award-winning mass-timber architecture, opens the final third of its new terminal. And there’s plenty to do in the city’s walkable downtown: The Portland Art Museum (PAM), the oldest art museum in the Pacific Northwest, completed a massive expansion in November 2025, featuring nearly 300 new major acquisitions and new galleries, including one dedicated solely to Black artists. Additionally, the city’s new WNBA team, the Portland Fire, will kick off its first season in May, drawing droves of fans to The Sports Bra.
