Aberdeen has announced “with deep sadness” the death of its non-executive director Michael O’Brien.
O’Brien passed away unexpectedly on Saturday 24 May.
He joined the Aberdeen Board in 2022, serving on both the group audit committee and the group risk and capital committee.
Aberdeen chairman Sir Douglas Flint said: “Our deepest condolences go out to Mike’s family and friends. He will be sorely missed by all his colleagues—not only for his insights, wisdom and deep industry knowledge but for his humility, his collegiality and, perhaps most of all, his warm and generous personality and sense of humour.”
A qualified actuary, O’Brien held a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics from the University of Limerick in Ireland.
He began his career in 1990 as an investment consultant at Towers Perrin, moving in 2000 to Barclays Global Investors, which was acquired by BlackRock in 2009.
He went on to become managing director and head of institutional business at the combined firm.
In 2010, he joined JP Morgan Asset Management (JPMAM), where he served as chief executive of the firm’s EMEA business, and then as co-head of global investment solutions.
From 2020, O’Brien was a senior adviser at Osmosis Investment Management, a non-executive director at the Carne Group, and from 2021, a senior adviser at fintech and solutions provider S64 Capital Innovation.
He also acted as investment adviser to the British Coal Pension Funds.
O’Brien was 62. A cause of death has not been disclosed.
