DESCRIPTION

The UC San Diego School of Global Policy and
Strategy (GPS) is an interdisciplinary, discovery-driven graduate school focusing on international affairs and public policy. We offer an
original and rigorous approach to policy, as our goal is to create global policy solutions that matter. At GPS, students learn from
world-class professors while surrounded by a diverse body of students from all over the world. And our San Diego location gives us the
freedom to seek progress untethered from tradition and lean into the power of the Pacific Coast as a hub of innovation, diversity, and
proactive problem-solving.

GPS instructs a diverse student body of domestic and international students in the MPP, MCEPA, MIA, and
MAS-IA degree programs, a joint Ph.D. with the Department of Political Science and executive education programs. GPS also administers the
International Studies Program, offering a rigorous curriculum for students interested in international affairs with nine B.A. degree
options, three combined BA/MIA and BA/MPP programs, and a minor program. GPS is also the parent organization to major research centers: 21st
Century China Center, 21st Century India Center, Big Pixel Initiative, Center for Commerce and Diplomacy, Cowhey Center on Global
Transformation, Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, Fudan-UC Center on Contemporary China, Japan Forum for Innovation and Technology,
Korea-Pacific Program, Policy Design and Evaluation Lab, SDG Policy Initiative, Wavemaker Lab, and the campus-wide Deep Decarbonization
Initiative and the UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation.

The Career Services Specialist 2 supports the Employer Relations
and Career Development team by implementing established outreach activities and career programs for graduate students and alumni. Under the
guidance of the Director, this role executes day-to-day employer engagement tasks, assists with the coordination of industry outreach
efforts, and delivers career programming that connects students with experiential opportunities. The Specialist applies professional career
development theories to advise students and ensures that all activities align with departmental policies and defined guidelines.

Utilizing a theoretical understanding of career development, advises students and alumni within a limited area of career services,
such as individual counseling, career planning, or improving job search competencies. Receives guidance from higher-level Career Services
Specialists.

  • Work Schedule is hybrid: 3 days in the office (La Jolla) and 2 days at home.
  • Must be willing and able to
    travel.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience developing rapport with clients, tracking client progress from initial intake through job acceptance. Experience
    in a goal-oriented career counseling environment; experience in monitoring client progress, reaching out to clients to promote job search
    progress, and to express support and encouragement.
  • Experience advising students in the selection of appropriate career goals via
    exploration of professional interests, skills, expertise, previous employment background, industry job prospects, and local and global
    employment opportunities. Experience promoting a variety of job search techniques appropriate to career goals; experience researching
    employment trends in a variety of industries to benefit student job search activities.
  • Experience in quickly and effectively
    assessing students’ career-related needs. Experience providing useful resources and advice within a short time frame in person, online, and
    in a group setting.
  • Experiencing planning, implementing, and delivering a wide variety of career development/job search programs.
    Experience planning and delivering resume workshops, interview skills workshops, job search workshops, and other presentations geared to
    career development and job/internship searches. Experience presenting in person to small and large groups, in person and digitally/via
    online mechanisms.
  • Excellent written communication skills. Ability to write clearly and concisely. Experience editing resumes, cover
    letters, and advising others on how to write effective resumes, cover letters, business correspondence, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience
    making career-related presentations to large and small groups, including in-person, online, and video-taped presentations. Experience in
    effectively responding to questions and inquiries in a group setting as well as in a one-on-one setting.
  • Basic knowledge of career
    development theories, adult development theory, counseling processes, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles,
    and job search techniques.
  • Experience summarizing and synthesizing information and data. Experience performing market research.
    Experience generating reports, preparing executive summaries. Experience collecting, documenting, and analyzing data and in order to
    recommend a course of action.
  • Experience interacting with corporate recruiters or employers. Experience in developing or identifying
    internship opportunities.
  • Bachelor’s degree required preferably in student affairs, coaching, career advising, student affairs with
    minimum 4 years functional career advising experience or industry experience, or a combination of experience and
    education.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. Rapport-building experience with clients, faculty,
    staff, students, and business professionals, corporate representatives. Professional, polished, business demeanor.
  • Creativity,
    resourcefulness, and use of original ideas. Ability to interpret trends, define problems, conceptualize ideas and convert to practical
    solutions. Ability to integrate advanced career management knowledge into programs to meet assessed needs of clients.
  • Ability to
    work with people from diverse cultures. Experience effectively interacting and advising diverse, multicultural, domestic and international
    populations, students,staff, faculty, employers, etc.
  • Ability to use computer systems and applications, presentation skills, verbal
    communication, written communication, and organization skills. Proficient in a highly computerized environment (databases, electronic
    bulletin boards, e-mail, social media, Microsoft Office). Willing to investigate, use and leverage technology.
  • Knowledge of laws,
    rules and regulations pertaining to hiring practices. Demonstrated knowledge of private, nonprofit and public sector hiring
    practices.
  • Prioritization and time management skills. Ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously in a fast-paced
    environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate group discussions, interactions and training, using group dynamics theory and
    experience.
