Fortress Investment Group co-CEO Josh Pack dies

Fortress Investment Group’s co-chief executive and managing partner Josh Pack has died.

Pack joined the Fortress credit funds business at its inception in 2002 and, since then, had held leadership and chief investment officer roles in private credit, private equity, real estate debt, net lease, distressed and opportunistic investing.

He had recently re-located to London, from the firm’s co-headquarters in Dallas (pictured), as part of plans to expand its geographic footprint.

Pack served on the board of directors at Fortress, as well as the leadership committee, and headed the firm’s environmental, social and governance committee.

Prior to joining Fortress, Pack was a vice president at Wells Fargo and, before that, he worked at specialty finance company American Commercial Capital, which was subsequently acquired by Wells Fargo.

“We are devastated by this loss. Josh was a gifted investor, a thoughtful strategist, a compassionate leader – and a deeply cherished friend to many,” said Fortress, in a statement posted on the firm’s website.

“A member of the Fortress family for over 23 years, Josh left an indelible mark on our institution. He cared deeply for his team, and that care was returned in kind.

“Most importantly, Josh was a devoted husband and father. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and ask that their privacy be respected during this tragic time. We are doing all we can to support the Pack family.”

Drew McKnight, co-chief executive and managing partner, will continue to lead the firm, and Jack Neumark will step into the role of co-chief executive and managing partner alongside him.

Fortress said that executive chair Pete Briger will “deepen his engagement with the firm and its operations for the immediate future”.

Fortress has $53bn (£39.5bn) of assets under management across credit and real estate, private equity and permanent capital investment strategies.

In April 2025, Fortress and Mubadala Investment Company announced a $1bn strategic partnership focused on credit and special situations co-investment opportunities.
