It’s been over 20 years since reality star fans learned the quintessential life lesson “What happens in Cabo stays in Cabo” from the then-teenaged Kristin Cavallari, but the Laguna Beach and The Hills TV star still ticks the Baja California peninsula as one of her all-time favorite vacation spots. “I’ve had a lot of fun in Mexico, I’ve had the most fun in Mykonos, and Santorini was one of the most beautiful places I’ve been to,” Cavallari says. “I think it’s really about who you’re with more than the destination, actually.”
These days, Cavallari is either traveling with her three children or her girlfriends, which means seeking out kid-friendly beach resorts and serenely gorgeous spots with hiking trails, respectively. Her work as the founder and CEO of the lifestyle brand Uncommon James and Uncommon Beauty (which just launched travel and mini sizes of its fragrance and skincare line) and host of the podcast “Let’s Be Honest” also frequently lands her on the road. Below, she discusses how she prioritizes her health when away from home, what one particular midwest city means to her, and why she hasn’t been to Paris yet.
What’s in her carry-on bag:
It’s like a little emergency kit, so I always have a Tide to-go stick, mints, little floss picks, a travel mascara, an eyebrow pencil—and oh, a tampon!
What she wears to fly:
I like being really comfortable and I usually take early flights, so it’s very common to see me in a sweat set or some loose trouser, and a sneaker. And I never put any makeup on, so you’ll usually find me in a baseball cap, just to hide everything.
How she stays healthy on the road:
I know my routine is going to be thrown off; I’m probably not going to be able to work out as much as I normally would, and I’m obviously not going to be able to eat as well. I think that if I eat really well and work out consistently at home, then I don’t have to beat myself up when I’m traveling, but I will still try to prioritize a workout if I can. If I’m going to be gone for five days, I typically will work out two or three times. For eating well, I bring food with me on the plane, always. You’ll never find me without food. Luckily, LAX now has great healthy options, which makes me so happy. If it’s L.A., New York, Chicago, I know how to navigate around those cities to get healthy food. If it’s a new city, I’ll research and google, “organic coffee shop” or “best organic restaurants,” because it’s important to me. Putting a little time into it beforehand can really pay off.
