My Favorite Suffolk Airbnb: A Lovingly Restored 18th Century Manor

It’s not often that a photograph of a sink will stop me mid scroll, but the bright green panelled bathroom of Melton Hall did just that. At first I thought it was an inspirational interiors post from Architectural Digest, but after a minute’s worth of rabbit-holing, I ended up on the Airbnb listing for the property. I was sold.

Maybe it was the checkerboard pool, the mention of 7.5 acres with a walled rose garden and wildflower meadow, the Mickey Mouse children’s room, or the fact it’s a stone’s throw from the coast. Either way, the spring school break was coming up, and I decided it would be the perfect spot for a short-stay family staycation.

From the listing, my expectations were dangerously high—and Melton Hall did not disappoint. It is an immaculate combination of contemporary interiors respectfully worked within period features. The pillared front door gives way to the light, airy entrance hall of modern art pieces and high arched ceilings. To the left sits the sophisticated living room, which feels more set up for adult time than family time. A white chaise longue is perched in front of large windows looking out onto a pristinely kept garden. For TV viewing, you push a button and a television rises from its hiding place, concealing the renaissance painting that hangs on the wall behind it. It perfectly sums up the place: modernity meets heritage.

As soon as we began exploring the three floors, my children’s little voices excitedly started suggesting a game of hide and seek. Honestly, I couldn’t think of a better place for it.

Each room is consistently beautiful and restrained—zero fussiness, just tasteful details, floor-length curtains, curated art, and comfortable beds. The final stop on our initial house tour was undoubtedly my children’s favorite room, and my favorite design quirk: Press on a bookcase in the hallway to reveal a cozy movie room, complete with Monitor Audio Dolby Surround Sound and a deep sofa that could comfortably seat seven in a lazy, reclined position. During predictably British springtime rainy afternoons, we snuggled under a blanket and flicked through Netflix’s finest.

This is a beach house in the plushest sense, with a hot tub overlooking the bay for warming up after dips in the crystal-clear sea (Dog’s Bay is a two-minute drive), and cozy robes, fluffy towels, and slippers provided by the hosts. A soaring 100-foot wall of glass frames the view from the pitch-roofed living/dining space and two primary bedrooms, each of which has a walk-in wardrobe and a large bathroom with a tub from where you can look out to the sea. With a fully kitted-out kitchen and a table that seats 10, this is a spot to book with family or friends and cook up big feasts that ramble on for hours. The kids’ room can sleep four, with a bunk bed that fits three and another bed reached by a little ladder, plus toys and books to keep mini visitors entertained. For those inevitable rainy days, there’s a home-theater-style art TV (set up with Netflix) and an electric Yamaha piano that calls out for sing-alongs.

Also called Brandy & Soda House—named after the lane that thirsty locals would walk on their way to the pub in Roundstone—is the work of Galway-born Damien McKeon and his Melburnian wife, Sarah Lucas. They spotted an old tumbledown cottage for sale online and couldn’t believe the view through its broken windows; when they came to view it, they had to “bush bash” through the overgrown foliage. Now, the Aussie influence is clear in the light and bright interiors of their contemporary renovation, with large photographs of Connemara land and seascapes rooting things back to the west of Ireland. No need to head into town for a tipple—a warming brandy in bespoke glasses is part of the generous welcome hamper, alongside traditional soda bread, local cheeses, umami-packed seaweed salt, and jam made by the nuns of nearby Kylemore Abbey. Although on nights when no one feels like cooking, it’s worth the trip for creamy pints of Guinness in O’Dowd’s on the edge of the harbor, followed by Killary mussels and garlicky crab claws up the street in Vaughan’s.
