The fleece that became the first fleece jacket, the legend goes, was actually supposed to become a toilet seat cover. But when Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard’s wife, Malind, picked up a roll of the fabric at an LA warehouse, she saw it had potential for other purposes. Without this stroke of inspiration, there might have never been outerwear that managed to swaddle, breathe, and move as well as some of the best fleece jackets available right now.

Not all are created equal. Some are light enough to be worn as a mid-layer under another coat, others require top billing. Some feature zippers that open from both directions, others can only open down to the chest. Some feature a single side pocket, others have so many pockets you might forget which one you actually used for your phone (a good problem, especially if it makes you look up at your surroundings). No matter what kind of fleece you’re looking for, we found one you’ll want to wear this season. Read on for our picks of the best fleece jackets to add to your packing list.

Patagonia

Classic Retro-X fleece jacket

Of course, we’re starting off strong with a favorite from Patagonia, the brand whose fleece jackets sort of started it all. Patagonia’s Pile fleece jackets are a staple of its product line, and have inspired imitators everywhere. It’s still a great option, but we think the company’s chunky, textured Retro-X fleece feels more of the moment.

Topo Designs

Vista quarter-zip fleece jacket

Colorado based Topo Designs was founded by a pair of friends who couldn’t find outdoor staples that they felt comfortable wearing off mountain. Its first products were hiking packs, but the company has long sold jackets, pants, and other outdoor accessories. These items have won fans over for their technical prowess and longevity, but also for how the company has embraced colorblocking as its visual trademark. The technique is evident in the colorways available for its light Vista quarter-zip fleece, including one that places a sharp blue next to gentle oatmeal.

male model in fleece jacket

Danner

Wolf Creek sherpa jacket

Danner is best known for its history producing extremely durable work and hiking boots. But the company has also been making hard-wearing yet handsome-looking apparel for quite some time. Its Wolf Creek pullover is no exception. Cut from recycled polyester fleece, the garment is reinforced at the elbows and forearms to prevent unnecessary wear and tear. Interestingly, it is only available in three colors that aren’t quite neutral: blue, olive, and orange.

female model in fleece jacket

Vuori is one of the fastest-growing activewear brands of the moment, but it has a reputation for designs that fit well but don’t always inspire. The Lou jacket, with its beefy pilgrim collar, is a relatively bold statement in the company’s otherwise simple product line. The design, which conjures images of cool-guy leather jackets with shearling linings, demands top billing. In other words, this is not a fleece to be worn under another coat. Don’t worry: it’s cut long enough to actually work as an outer layer.

male model in fleece jacket

Earth Studies

MS-110 Escep jacket

Purpose-built clothing from mainstream brands is rarely bad at doing what it says it will do. But it also rarely inspires unexpected delight. You cannot say the same of gear from Earth/Studies, a brand producing a tight range of technical shorts, pants, and jackets that can withstand any challenge presented by weather while still turning heads in the subway. The roomy MS-110 ESCEP fleece jacket is no exception to this rule, constructed from a dusty green recycled polyester fleece with cotton rib and ripstop reinforcements. Best of all, like many other Earth/Studies garments, the jacket has an absurd number and range of pockets. The best might be the cavernous “foraging” pocket in the front, which you can cinch closed to hold any treasures you find in the wild. (It also works for your phone.)

male model in fleece jacket

Quince

Polar fleece snap pullover

The promise of Quince is simple and enticing. The company claims it ships clothes to customers directly from the factory in which they are produced, allowing it to sell at often staggeringly low prices. There are apparent trade-offs—mainly that its products don’t look that distinctive. But it’s hard to fault a garment like the Quince Polar Fleece for not looking like a luxury item when it costs less than a date night meal at some restaurants. And anyway, it nails the basics, soft to the touch and designed to work either as a jacket or mid-layer. You love to see it.

male model in fleece jacket

Arc’teryx appears to design all its gear to fill a particular technical use. Fortunately, in the case of the Covert zip neck, the scenario is something anyone who walks regularly will encounter basically every day from the first frosts to the final thaws of spring: “It’s cold but I’m doing something that will make me sweat.” The recycled polyester fabric is just thick enough to both offer warmth and breathability—a tricky balance. Plus, strategic articulations allow the jacket to move with your body. Ultimately, the pullover, like many other Arc’teryx products, is so good at what it does, you’ll want to wear it as much as you can. Thankfully, it also looks sick.

male model in fleece jacket

Uniqlo

Fleece full-zip jacket

It’s the worst kept secret in fashion: Uniqlo is where the best-dressed go for simple wardrobe staples like shirts and socks. But there is heat in its outerwear section, too. In this case, that’s meant literally. Though they’re constructed of a relatively thin polyester, Uniqlo’s fleece jackets are designed to keep you plenty warm. When you pull it on, you’ll notice piping at the cuffs and hem, which keeps the openings from flapping in the chilly wind.

male model in fleece jacket

Gramicci

Shadow Plaid sherpa jacket

Gramicci is the rare label that has both the buy-in of the fashionable and the outdoorsy, given its history making clothing for climbers, mainly thanks to its pants with easy-adjust belts. Its light fleece jacket is modeled after a pair of cozy flannel pajamas, and packs plenty of pockets. Better yet, the company makes a matching pair of pants, in case you really want to flex.

White, red and blue fleece jacket with zipper

Drake’s

Boucle Wool Zip fleece jacket

The menswear wizards at Drake’s, a company founded primarily as a maker of beautiful accessories like scarves and shawls, began making fleece jackets a couple of years ago. As you might expect from a company now mainly known for its tailoring, Drake’s fleece is more fitted than those from other brands. Size appropriately.

Fjällräven

Vardag Pile Fleece jacket

Fjallraven is primarily known for its kindercore backpacks and bags, but the company has been making clothes designed to withstand the outdoors since the late ’60s. The outer body of the Vardag Pile Fleece is made of two layers of teddy fleece—just the right amount of warmth for late fall and early winter explorations. The jacket has three pockets, including one eye-catching snap on the chest.

Blue and multi colored design fleece jacket on female model.

Sundae School

Kloudy Bay Fleece jacket

Those looking for a bold alternative to simple solids, color blocking, and the occasional stripe, should look no further than the wares of Sundae School. The Seoul-born label that’s now based in California might primarily be known for its sublimely flavored edibles, but the brand has been making colorful fleeces for a few years. The cuddly Kloudy Bay fleece is just one entrant in its line inspired by urban landscapes and bridges.

male model in fleece jacket

District Vision

Heavy Duty fleece jacket

Traveling to practically arctic conditions? The District Vision fleece is constructed from a heavyweight Italian fleece with an internal shell layer that’s super durable. No matter how cold it gets, the jacket should be plenty thick enough to keep you warm.

male model in fleece jacket

Carhartt

Loose-fit fleece pullover

Though these days you’re just as likely to see a magazine editor wearing Carhartt as a dock worker, the company’s line of gear is still built to handle tough conditions. Its fleece, a cozy, high-pile fabric, is constructed with a loose, relaxed fit. There are two pockets in the front, placed in the exact same spot as they are on your favorite hoodie.

Blue fleece jacket with teal, red and orange striped across chest of male model.

Cotopaxi

Teca Fleece full-zip jacket

The vast majority of Cotopaxi’s new backpacks, travel gear, and clothes are made from recycled materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill. The company’s fleeces are no different. Featuring Cotopaxi’s logo and three colored stripes, the cut is a bit more fitted than some of the others we’ve highlighted. Size up if you want a cozy outer layer; size down if you plan to wear it under a larger jacket.

FAQ:

What exactly is a trench coat?

By definition, a trench coat is a long, usually double-breasted raincoat made from gabardine, a water-resistant material that resembles khaki. Created in Great Britain during the early 1800s, the heritage design was originally made as a polished and uniform way for World War I soldiers to fight against harsh climates, but has evolved into something a lot more common for every day wear, regardless of weather. Famed fashion house Burberry debuted its now iconic version in 1897, and it remains a signature staple in the brand’s collection. However, over the last few decades the lines have gotten increasingly blurrier about what actually falls into the category of “trench.”

Most styles will have a laundry list of definite features, including a belted waist, back vents, a storm flap to protect against the elements, epaulettes (or buttoned straps on the shoulder––I typically use them to keep my bag straps from slipping down my arm), and a deep pocket for storing your essentials. Functionality aside, the chic, well-tailored silhouette has the power to instantly enhance an outfit, which I’ve found particularly handy while on work trips where I’m traveling with colleagues or meeting a group for dinner as soon as I land.

What to look for in a trench coat?

Fabrication and construction play a huge role in the longevity of the style and are always two of the first things that I pay close attention to. You’ll want to look for materials that are built to last, like leather, denim, cotton, and corduroy, as well as more modern takes on the traditional gabardine material, such as this highly-technical style from activewear brand Adanola’s new collection for Fall 2025.

You’ll also want to consider what exactly you’ll be wearing it for. If you want something that’s great for everyday use, a more traditional style from the likes of Uniqlo or Everlane might be optimal. Those who are ready to fully commit can consider investing in a tried-and-true wardrobe icon like Burberry’s signature trench, because it’s the sort of piece you know you’ll have forever.

If you’re still not sure where to start, continue reading for a well-curated edit of our favorite trench coats currently on the market, all of which have so much to offer to your travel wardrobe in their own unique way.

Adanola

Technical trench coat

This new trench coat from Adanola is the perfect blend of athleisure and tradition. Made from a highly technical waterproof material that is surprisingly lightweight, it has a pointed collar and a long, straight cut that falls just below the knee. The snap-fastening vent at the back helps with ease of movement.

Ducie

Corrin leather trench coat

Durability is key when looking for a trench coat that can withstand the consistent wear and tear of travel, and very few things are more reliable than genuine leather. This trench coat from Ducie, a London-based brand beloved by celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Hailey Bieber, and Kate Hudson, takes the heritage design and elevates it with high-quality leather that only gets better with time.

model wearing long trench coat

Burberry

Castleford trench coat

It’s nearly impossible to talk about the best trench coats on the market without mentioning Burberry—and this classic longline style is the definition of an investment piece you’ll have forever. Tailored in a traditional double-breasted silhouette, it’s made from a water-wicking gabardine material and has all the defining features you could ever want, including buttoned epaulets and a back vent that keeps you cool while preventing water from pooling around your back.

model wearing long trench coat

London Fog

Hooded maxi trench coat

If you’re traveling somewhere with unpredictable weather, like London or San Francisco, or just like to stay protected from sudden rain showers wherever you go, this hooded trench coat is essential. Impeccably made by heritage outerwear brand London Fog, it has all the defining features of a classic trench plus the added protection of a removable drawstring head covering. A nice finishing touch? The buttoned waist-tabs keep the belt buckle from slipping out and potentially getting lost while you’re on the go.

model wearing long trench coat

Everlane

The Modern trench coat

When I’m not in the mood to wear a long trench while traveling, I usually reach for for something more mid-length, like this modern style from Everlane. It falls right above the knee, so I don’t have to worry about it getting caught in car doors or in the seat of the airplane. It’s especially great on work trips or in chilly or mild conditions where you might need something lighter than a full-length coat.

model in trench coat

Uniqlo

Relaxed trench coat

If you’re looking for something a little more traditional without the hefty price tag attached, this trench coat from Uniqlo definitely fits the bill. It has a relaxed silhouette that hangs right around the body, and comes in three different neutral shades, all of which pair perfectly with fall capsule wardrobes. Plus, it’s priced well under $200, a rarity for similar styles on the market. Cuff the sleeves to expose the chic plaid lining.

Hyde wearing a suede trench coat

Shelby Hyde

As mentioned, when it comes to trench coats, materials matter. If you’re someone who tries to steer clear of genuine leather, this corduroy style from Paige is a great alternative. Tailored in a column silhouette that’s reminiscent of something from the ‘90s, it’s durable by design yet polished enough to be worn to a work meeting or dinner, fresh off the plane. Pro tip: Store your cardholder and passport in the front flap pockets for safe keeping and easy access.

model wearing long stone blue trench coat

Sporty and lightweight, Ukrainian brand Norba’s take on a classic trench coat is a perfect match for any airport outfit. Between the oversized fit, bold shoulders, and swisher-like material, it has an undeniably ‘80s feel that instantly elevates even the simplest of looks—think activewear cat suits and coordinating legging sets. It also folds into a compact shape that can be packed away once you land.

model wearing long trench coat

Madewell

Double-breasted trench coat

Defined by a subtle checked print, this Madewell trench is great to bring along when you want to pack light and need to wear something warm. Not only is it made from a durable wool-blend, but it has a well-tailored shape that’s aligned with the current fashion trends, which means it’s bound to be a standout piece that will make you look put together no matter what you wear with it.

model wearing long, dark blue trench coat

Trench coats, by design, are meant to protect you from the elements, but this Rains jacket takes it to the next level. It’s made from a highly technical, water- and wind-proof fabric in a shin-length silhouette that’s equal parts sleek and pragmatic. The featherweight design can easily be folded into a compact shape that will fit comfortably in a backpack or carry-on, so if you don’t want to wear it en route, you won’t have to worry about it taking up too much space in your luggage.

model wearing long trench coat

A polished interpretation of a wardrobe icon, this Damson Madder trench coat is a functional style that, thanks to the contrasting sailor bib and pintucks, doubles as a statement piece. The oversized silhouette is complimented by blouson cuffed sleeves that give it a more refined look, and it’s made from conscious fabrics—100% organic cotton with a recycled polyester lining.

Rainy day essentials

A few weeks of heavy rain in New York City made me realize how ill prepared I am in the rain gear department. As much as I need some new waterproof gear, I definitely don’t want to pay full price for it. I’m adding a packable rain jacket, travel-friendly umbrella, and a comfortable rain boot to my Amazon shopping cart this Prime Day. As far as the rain jacket and boots go, I’m hoping for something polished enough to wear into the office and lightweight enough to fit in my carry-on. And I’ve got my eye on the Weatherman travel umbrella—it looks compact enough to fit in my tote bag. —Meaghan Kenny, associate commerce editor

I use the detox serum from Grown Alchemist every day and night. It has been keeping my skin smooth, balanced, and free of blemishes. I’ll also be stocking up on the brand’s hand cream, with cold weather creeping in, I want to make sure my hands are moisturized and soft during the harshest time of year. It’s made from orange peel and vanilla, so it smells amazing while also locking in moisture. —Paris Wilson, commerce producer

I’m nearing the end of a few go-to Tula products—the under eye balm and moisturizing primer, specifically—so if they’re on sale, I’ll stock up on a couple of each. I use the balm regularly, but it’s especially nice to have on hand after a long flight. —Madison Flager, senior commerce editor

A reliable travel steamer

As I frustratedly put on yet another wrinkled shirt the other day, it dawned on me that I could just purchase a steamer. So that’s what’s on my wishlist for this sale: a good steamer, large enough to smooth some serious wrinkles, but small enough to stow in my luggage. —Mercedes Bleth, global associate director, social

Upgraded home essentials

I’ve had the Hatch Restore on my radar for months now, thanks in large part to hearing many a podcast ad with hosts raving about what a difference the alarm clock has made in their morning routine. I’m hoping to see it on sale this week—with shorter, gloomier days ahead, the gradual sunrise light sounds like a pleasant way to wake up.—M.F.

I’ve been nervous about cleaning my couch on my own, but after going to Crate and Barrel to see what they recommend, a sales associate suggested I buy a velvet cleaner and save a couple hundred dollars having someone else do it. The moment I was ready to get to work, a quick read of the directions told me I was missing a key tool: a hand vacuum. The couch is going to look unrecognizable once it’s delivered. —P.W.

Since moving (and traveling a lot) this spring, I’ve been stocking up on all things comfy and relaxing in order to help make my new place feel like home. The first thing on my Prime Day list is a pair of summer-friendly house slippers like the Adidas Aqua Slides that I’ve heard are super cushiony-soft. Sporty, outdoorsy goods

First of all, I often travel with tennis gear, so I have my eye on a large tennis backpack. These bags would also make a good carry-on for any traveler, as they have separate compartments for shoes and clothes. I’m also interested in doing longer, more difficult hiking, and maybe eventually a backpacking trip. These lightweight hiking poles would be easy to bring along and helpful on intermediate trails. Lastly, I’m planning a road trip through the Southwest this fall, and I’m looking to bring little gadgets like a phone charger adapter for the car and a fun Polaroid camera for snapshots along the way. —Jessica Puckett, former senior editor, transportation and travel news

This Prime day I’m prioritizing a mix of sustainability and fun—especially for my road trips. I am in absolute need of an on-the-go water bottle and recently fell in love with the look and feel of this reusable tumbler travel mug. From park days to hiking picnics, I’m also seeking a portable, ultralight hammock to add to my cart. I’m thinking it will make the perfect sun-gazing partner. —Jessica Chapel, editorial assistant

A set of handy packing cubes

I’m looking to up my packing organization game. I used to be a staunch carry-on only devotee, but lately, have gotten a bit too comfortable lazily throwing a bunch of things into a checked bag. A tech refresh

I’m ready to get my act together when it comes to my day-to-day tech—that’s right, I still don’t have AirPods. I was resistant for years, and leaned into the cord-girl aesthetic for a minute, but it’s time to move on and catch up with the rest of the world. Also, as someone who becomes scattered under stress, I am the ideal candidate for Apple AirTags, and honestly, I’m a little hurt and surprised that my friends and family didn’t buy them for me a long time ago. —Alex Erdekian, former travel bookings editor

TikTok-discovered beauty secrets

I’m on a mission to stock up on all my wishlist hair and beauty finds during the sale. I confess that TikTok has inspired most of these, and for good reason. Who hasn’t been amazed by the magical properties of Chris Appleton’s Pure Wow hair line (frizz-free hair here I come) or the Laneige lip mask, which has now become my holy grail lip product, and the brand’s lip balm, too. In my quest for glass skin, I’ve been dabbling in LED therapy and have my eye on the Project E Beauty Skin Rejuvenation Photon Mask. It has seven LED color settings, and promises glowy results. I’m going to round out my stash with Avène’s thermal spring water spray, a refreshing staple during this hot New York summer. —Pallavi Mohan Kumar, senior visuals editor

A sleek, satisfying tech kit

I’ve been looking for a travel organizer that sorts out my always-tangled tech—and dare I say, looks good while doing it. I think the Bellroy kit might be it. I love how this has room for all my accessories, including larger ones, and zips out flat for easy access. Plus, it’s made from recycled fabric, and comes in a range of fun colors. Sign me up for the Bronze, please and thank you. —Arati Menon, global digital director

Socks, because you always need more

It’s no secret that single socks sneak away whenever your back is turned. Travel amplifies the issue—it’s easy enough to lose a pair between your dryer and your bedroom, but when you’re throwing them all crumpled and used into your backpack and moving from hostel to hostel? Forget about it! I adores these Calvin Klein half-calfs, and thankfully the Prime Day gods saw fit to discount. —Charlie Hobbs, editorial assistant

Vuori Cozy Sherpa jacket

I wore this cozy sherpa jacket from Vuori nonstop last year—and I can’t wait to pull it out again as soon as the temperature dips. It’s the perfect in-between jacket: Warm and soft enough for cold fall morning walks, and light enough to wear into early spring. I wore it just as easily on a trip to Boston last November as I did on an early morning hike in April. As much as I love wearing this cute jacket on its own, it’s equally functional for layering under larger coats in the winter. Made from recycled materials, the sherpa fleece locks in heat and there are two zippered hand pockets for small must-haves. My favorite thing about the Vuori sherpa jacket: It is incredibly well-made and will be a permanent resident in my closet for years to come.

The brand’s mission is to reduce its impact on the planet; as such, this jacket is made of primarily recycled wool.

Along with my running shoes and swimsuit, there’s another wardrobe item I pack for almost every single trip: my Gap jean jacket.

This trusty travel companion has logged almost as many miles as my frequent flier accounts since I bought it five-ish years ago. It appears in so many of my trip photos that sometimes I think I should change things up a bit.

But then again, no other piece of outerwear goes the distance quite like this one. Its versatility, durability, and functionality make it the ideal choice for whatever is on the docket, whether that’s a city center walkabout or a bike ride further afield. And then, there’s the subtle style statement it conveys. I’m by no means a fashionista, but a denim jacket somehow instantly infuses any look with a dose of casual cool. My favorite outfit pairing is a flowy skirt, tank top, and a pair of flat sandals, but since denim is possibly the most versatile fabric on the planet, you can easily dress it up or down. Whenever I slip it on, I feel a slight confidence boost—maybe I do have my act together, even as I’m struggling to figure out a city’s metro system or how much I owe for groceries in local currency.

Part of that is because the Gap jean jacket actually does help me keep my act together on often-hectic travel days—largely thanks to its pockets, which, for me, are a clothing non-negotiable while traveling (even more so when I’m with my son). The jacket’s four outer pockets (two at the waist, two buttoned ones at the chest) are standard, but what I really love are the two inner vertical pockets, one on each side. They’re perfect for storing essentials like my phone, hotel key, and small change purse when I don’t feel like hauling around a larger bag, and because they’re plenty deep and have a top opening, I never worry about anything falling out.

Those handy pockets also help take the hassle out of in-transit days, especially at the airport. Because I’m team paper, I prefer a printed boarding pass, which I stash into the left inner pocket, along with my phone and passport, for easy access—no more panicked rifling through a purse or backpack wondering where I last put them. Yes, I do have to remove the jacket before clearing security (but I’ve had to remove the flimsiest of wraps as well). As soon as I’m through the scanners, I slip it back on, with everything tucked firmly inside—easy peasy.

Of course, it does have its limitations. In rainy weather, a jean jacket isn’t ideal (denim is durable but not waterproof, after all), and when the temperature drops, a heavier coat is essential. But it’s still my go-to for almost any trip (up next for me: Greece). Bottom line: Whether it’s made by Gap or another brand (I’ve shared a few additional recommendations below), a jean jacket deserves a spot on every savvy traveler’s packing list.
