Picking an airport-appropriate outfit is never straightforward. One wrong move and you’re sweating through your shirt in security or shivering under the cabin air conditioning for eight hours. You want something that carries you from check-in to baggage claim without making you look like you’ve given up on life—not fully, anyway.

As a menswear writer, I’ve tested just about every option: tailoring on a red-eye, track pants through Heathrow, even double denim at JFK (which felt like a great idea, until it wasn’t). After enough trial and error, I’ve landed on a travel uniform that I can actually trust. It works no matter where I’m flying or how long I’m stuck in the air, and it’s become my default fit every single time I leave the house with a suitcase. And now, it can be yours too.

Jump to:

The baseball cap

Every airport outfit needs a decent hat. It keeps those bad hair days in check, hides jet-lagged eyes, and gives you a bit of anonymity when you’re dragging a suitcase through T5. My favorite right now is this simple hat from Uniqlo. Fitted with the Japanese label’s signature Dry Tech, it wicks away sweat and disperses moisture fast. It has just the right amount of stretch, and at just $30, it won’t break the bank. All of these solid-color caps will help complete any effortless travel day outfit.

Where to wear it: Maui’s Hamoa Beach, which is south of Hana, is a must for surfing and boogie-boarding—courtesy of the easterly trade winds.

Protective sun hats

Rather than just looking out to sea, why don’t you also set sail on it? Hawaii has great options for boat rides, but the vast open waters can mean windswept hair (the bad kind). While some tousling is unavoidable, a drawstring bucket hat with ties under the chin can help keep your hair in place—all while protecting your face from the sun.

Lululemon

All Sport wide-brim hat

Where to wear it: Maui is home to The Sailing Trilogy, a company that’s been running tours on the island for almost five decades. Grab your drawstring hat and jump aboard one of its six maritime adventures.

Water-ready shoes

Water shoes didn’t used to be “a thing,” and certainly not a “fashion” thing, but now their slightly technical appearance, being made of jelly-like rubber or neoprene, suits the surf-friendly beach style. For something a bit less techy, try a trusty Adidas slider.

The longevity of animal print has long surpassed what we can consider a fashion trend. Long before trend cycles and fast-fashion, animal print moved across cultures and continents. Today, it has cemented itself as one of the smartest pieces you can pack on any trip.

I always pack at least one animal-printed item in my suitcase, whether it’s a zebra handbag or a cheetah flat. I do this because it’s stylish, but also because it’s an effortless way to spruce up any outfit. Animal prints like leopard, snakeskin, and cow print might look busy on paper, but in practice, they behave like a neutral. These prints go with every color and fabric in my carry-on: black, white, red, denim, linen, you name it. You can dress animal print up, wear it down, or let it talk while everything else in your capsule wardrobe stays simple. One piece of clothing or accessory with a bold print can carry an entire look from a morning stroll down London’s cobblestone streets to a rooftop dinner in Paris. And for travelers, this type of versatility helps you pack less and wear more.

A brief history of animal print

Animal print traveled far before it ever hit our Instagram feeds. Egyptian hieroglyphics from 1290 to 1224 BC show leopard skins worn by royalty and warriors. In Zulu culture, leopard fur suggests elevated social status. And by the 1930s, Hollywood brought animal print to the big screen: Movie stars like Joan Crawford and major films like Tarzan and the Ape Man made prints more mainstream, while pin-ups and corseted dresses in leopard and snake patterns signaled confidence and sex appeal.

The first appearance of leopard print on the runway was by Christian Dior. Post-World War II in 1947, Dior’s “New Look” showcase included a jungle theme, elevating leopard into high fashion that would later be worn by femme fatale icons like Eartha Kitt and Marilyn Monroe. In the 1980s, designers including Alexander McQueen, Roberto Cavalli, and Dolce & Gabbana continued to reinterpret the trend—turning a potentially rebellious motif into sophisticated, city-ready style. Even in the early 2000s, when pop culture flirted with tackiness and Y2K maximalism (we all watched Jersey Shore, right?), animal print persisted, reimagined through thoughtful styling and the creativity of designers and street style alike.

Today, animal print is both expressive and endlessly practical. I pack a snakeskin-printed boot the same way I pack denim or a great jacket. On busy streets everywhere from Milan to New York City, you’ll see it styled subtly: a leopard flat under tailored pants, a cheetah belt with simple jean, or a printed scarf tucked under a long wool coat. They add texture, edge, and a hint of playful rebellion, without ever feeling costume-y. Below, 14 staples embracing the always-in-style trend to pack on your next getaway.

The days of me panic ordering trendy outfits before every vacation are long gone. Ever since I started investing in quality basics, I’ve been saving myself money and suitcase space, and stopped feeling like I have “nothing to wear” in my closet full of clothes. When I travel, I only pack hard-working staples I can wear with multiple outfits for a variety of activities on my itinerary. Of course, those essentials will vary slightly by season. When building a winter capsule wardrobe, everyday basics, thermal layers, and durable shoes are key.

Whether you’re headed on a fun ski trip or plan on cozying up by the fireplace in an upstate New York cabin, you’re going to need comfortable, versatile pieces to wear. I’ve done the legwork for you and rounded up a list of 10 must-haves to pack on your next cold-weather getaway. From affordable cashmere sweaters to surprisingly warm packable jackets, these multi-purpose essentials are the foundation of every winter capsule wardrobe.

Jump to:

The simple base layer

Dressing for cold weather is all about layering. The perfect base for every winter outfit: a soft, basic long-sleeve shirt to wear underneath jackets and vests or on its own. I toss one or two solid-colored tops like these into my suitcase every time, whether I’m traveling for work, a girls trip, or a romantic getaway. Neutral colors are your best bet—they can be tucked into just about any pair of pants you pack and reworn with almost any outfit.

Skims

Cotton Jersey long-sleeve shirt

Aritzia

Tna Homestretch long-sleeve shirt

True Classic

Classic long-sleeve crew neck

Quince

Luxe Touch long-sleeve T-shirt

The cozy sweater

Is there anything more cozy in the winter than slipping on a perfectly lived-in sweater? These sweaters are equal parts polished and comfy, keeping you warm all day long while still looking put together enough for a business meeting or fancy lunch with friends. The best thing about the super-soft sweaters below is that they’re not too heavy or bulky, so you can actually pack one or two without it taking up your entire carry-on.

Old Navy

SoSoft crew neck sweater

Seafarer Cotton Rib sweater

Banana Republic

Merino wool sweater

The relaxed trouser

A sleek pair of pants like these relaxed trousers are so versatile; they transition from the office to a dinner date effortlessly. They’re fitted and flattering around the waist, but give your legs plenty of breathing room on the go. Pair them with your favorite loafers or a plain white sneaker and you’re ready for anything.

Abercrombie & Fitch

A&F Sloane tailored pant

Aritzia

The Effortless Pant

Todd Snyder

Favorite chino

The dark wash jean

We all need at least one pair of jeans that never lets us down. Even when I’m planning to dress up for most of a trip, I still like to give myself the option to throw on a comfy and casual pair of jeans just in case. A straight-leg, dark-wash pair of denim will go well with any sweater or top you’re wearing.

Paige

Stevie straight jean

Old Navy

High-Waisted Wow wide-leg jeans

Levi’s

501 Original Fit jeans

Madewell

The 1991 loose straight jean

The packable puffer

Anyone traveling somewhere cold this season should invest in one good packable puffer. Styles like these offer a surprising amount of warmth for how lightweight and seemingly thin they are. The best part? A compressible jacket like the Nano Puff can be packed down into a small bag, making it a must-have for travelers with little suitcase room traveling from a warm-weather destination or bringing multiple coats along. I rolled up Alo’s Gold Rush puffer in my carry-on for a recent trip to Banff National Park when I didn’t have enough room to bring a second coat. It’s lightweight but warm enough for a day exploring outdoors when worn over a fleece sweater or sweatshirt.

FP Movement

Pippa packable puffer jacket

Patagonia men’s Nano Puff jacket

Vuori

Echo insulated jacket 2.0

The city coat

If you’re headed out for a day of sightseeing, you’ll want to throw on a chic long coat that’s both warm and stylish. These wool coats help elevate any winter outfit while locking in plenty of heat for a full day of exploring. A long coat isn’t exactly suitcase-friendly, so I recommend wearing it on the plane rather than trying to pack it.

Quince

Mongolian Cashmere overcoat

Rodd & Gunn

Murchison coat

Banana Republic Italian Melton topcoat

The durable boot

You won’t regret investing in a durable boot this winter that can withstand a bit of wear and tear. These classic Chelsea boots strike a balance between practicality and style. They can handle uneven terrain and less-than-perfect weather while still rounding out a polished outfit. Even though boots aren’t the most packable shoe you own (if possible, wear them on the plane), they always prove worth it in cold weather.

Blundstone

All-Terrain Thermal Chelsea boot

Sam Edelman

Laguna Chelsea boot

Thursday Boot Co.

Legend chelsea boot

The casual sneaker

The year-round essential I’m packing no matter what: a comfortable sneaker. These versatile kicks from Asics, Adidas, Alo, and New Balance will match any outfit in your carry-on, whether it’s a pair of jeans, leggings, or a casual dress. When you’re walking around a new city clocking upwards of 20,000 steps, you’ll definitely want a trusted walking shoe you can wear all day long, blister-free.

Adidas

Handball Spezial shoes

The cold-weather accessories

They can be bulky, but there’s no denying the importance of a warm scarf, beanie, or pair of gloves to protect us from extreme temperatures. These cold-weather accessories are always worth having on hand, whether you’re commuting to work, headed on a ski trip, or boarding a chilly plane.

Ralph Lauren

Classic scarf

The North Face

Etip recycled gloves

Quince

Cashmere lined leather gloves

Lululemon

Ribbed knit beanie

Aritzia

Cashmere rib beanie

The leather bag

Rounding out our list of items for the perfect winter capsule wardrobe for travel is none other than a leather bag—the kind you’ll wear anywhere and everywhere this season and beyond. We’ve gathered a few of our favorite styles, from day-to-night shoulder bags to roomy totes, that can hold your daily essentials and souvenirs. I try to save packing space by bringing along only one black leather bag that will match every outfit and suit any occasion. Cuyana’s System Tote and Lo & Sons’ day bag come highly recommended by our editors for their spacious interiors, durable straps, and gorgeous looks.

Madewell

Team USA athletes have been putting in blood, sweat, and tears while training for the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics—but that doesn’t mean those of us cheering them on don’t deserve to be nice and cozy. Whether you’re planning to root for the red, white, and blue from your couch or have plans to travel to Northern Italy to attend the Games, the new Skims for Team USA collection has all the loungewear and accessories you need to stay comfy while also being extremely stylish and patriotic.

The limited-edition line, which dropped on Skims.com at 12 p.m. ET on January 8, is comprised of Team USA–branded clothing, sleepwear, winter essentials (that scarf!), hair accessories, menswear, intimates, and adaptive styles, with prices ranging from $20 to $88 and sizes ranging from XXS–4X. The pieces, which will be gifted to Team USA athletes ahead of the Games, feature the flattering silhouettes and buttery soft fabrics Skims is known for, but with an all-American twist that couldn’t be more timely. And because Team USA Paralympians deserve just as much of the spotlight as Team USA Olympians, just about every product in the collection has a Paralympic iteration as well.

This is actually the fourth time that Skims, which was founded by Kim Kardashian and Jens Grede in 2019, has partnered with Team USA, as previous collections were created for the Tokyo 2020, Beijing 2022, and Paris 2024 Games. “It’s truly an honor to continue this incredible partnership with Team USA,” says Kardashian, co-founder and chief creative officer of Skims. “This collection celebrates the courage, determination, and excellence of these incredible athletes, inspiring us to all push further, dream bigger, and embrace who we are. I’m proud that Skims can support and celebrate them as they go for the gold.”

To further celebrate the athletes making us proud, the campaign for the new collection features several impressive Milano Cortina Team USA members, including Olympic gold medalist and three-time world ice dance champion Madison Chock; two-time Paralympian, world champion, and World Cup medalist Nordic skier Dani Aravich; and Olympian, world champion, and multiple World Cup gold medalist in bobsled, Kaysha Love.

Ready to add to cart? We have a feeling the collection will sell out quick (much like Ralph Lauren’s new Team USA gear), so scroll down to see some of our top picks, then snag your favorites as soon as possible. Let the games begin!

Wondering what to pack for a trip to Ireland? First things first, expect to encounter all four seasons in one day. “The cliché holds true,” says Cathrine Burke, co-owner of the luxury boutique hotel Breac House. “One moment you could be basking in southern sunshine in Kinsale, and the next dodging raindrops just 30 minutes north in Cork city.”

Ireland’s geographic location means warm, moist air from the Atlantic collides with polar air from the north, often resulting in days that the Irish Meteorological Service, Met Éireann, describe as cloudy, humid weather with rain, followed by brighter, colder weather with showers. The rain and rainbows are part of Ireland’s charm—but they also mean travelers need to pack wisely, prioritizing versatile, weather-ready layers.

After traveling to Ireland several times, I’ve learned a thing or two about what you actually need to have in your suitcase. For even more insider tips, I asked locals for their top recommendations on what to wear and what to leave at home. Below, I’ve compiled the ultimate guide on what to pack for a seamless trip to Ireland, one of the world’s most enchanting places to visit.

Jump to:

Luggage

Travel light to navigate Ireland’s cobbled streets and Dublin city transit with agility. Opt for a standard carry-on, and keep contents organized with packing cubes to minimize suitcase chaos. We recommend chic suitcases and travel accessories from SteamLine Luggage, an Irish brand known its vintage-style pieces that look right at home in the country’s castles and historic boutique hotels. Ireland is also a treasure trove of excellent artisan goods, many made with linen and wool, so consider bringing a foldable duffel bag in your carry-on to fill with extra souvenirs on your way home.

Peak Design

Streamline

The Entrepreneur 2.0 carry-on

Steamline Luggage

Packing cubes (set of four)

Waterproof outerwear

Ireland’s rainfall produces exceptional produce and some of the world’s best dairy products. “We’re very favored by nature,” says Darina Allen, founder of Ballymalloe Cookery School, where visitors learn traditional Irish cooking techniques and wander the cooking garden grounds. That means outdoor adventures in Ireland call for a waterproof jacket or raincoat, ideally one that folds up into its own pouch so you can pack the wet item away when warming up with a pint in the pub. We love the pieces from Rains, a brand that combines Swedish functional design with contemporary fashion for a rain coat that won’t cramp your style.

Quince

Oversized rain jacket

Mac in a Sac

Origin waterproof packable jacket

Trench coats

A water-repellent trench coat never goes out of style, and will look right at home on urban travels through Dublin or Galway. “Trench coats always have a nice [effect],” says Banks. The longer length protects your entire look from getting damp and the style often looks nicer than a rain jacket as an evening layer for a nice dinner. They’re the ultimate shoulder-season outerwear item thanks to their versatility, effortlessly taking you through temperature changes.

Todd Snyder

Abercrombie & Fitch

Classic trench coat

Essential layers

If you’re going to spend time being active outdoors, you’ll want to be able to regulate your temperature with items you can easily take on or off. Start with a lightweight tee, then layer on a button-down flannel, and add a wool cardigan if the temperature requires. This sequence will keep you warm and dry traveling through windy coastal towns, and allow you to shed the layers when you head inside to a cozy pub.

Ireland is also famous for the wool Aran jumper (known to Americans as an Aran sweater). “Wool itself is water-repellent,” says Banks. “That’s where the Aran jumper came from. They were knitted for seamen by their wives.” Burke recommends picking up locally made wool knitwear from Donegal’s Moss & Cable. Even still, wool can be itchy, so packing a long-sleeve shirt or a T-shirt to wear underneath is the key to staying comfortable.

Tuckernuck

Comfortable walking shoes

“People love to walk [in Ireland],” says Banks. “My in-laws can easily get 20,000 steps in a day.” To live as the locals do, you’ll want sturdy, waterproof shoes. Banks called out the Nike Gore-Tex trail shoes and Tretorn sneakers for their comfort, support, and durability on various terrains. For evenings out, comfortable yet stylish sneakers or flats are ideal. “You can leave the heels at home,” Banks says. Ireland has uneven terrain, from cobblestone streets to rugged hiking trails, often wet with rain or mud. Stick with a versatile pair of comfortable, waterproof walking shoes instead.

When it comes to navigating Ireland’s puddles, bogs, and muddy conditions, Wellies are a staple. “You will see a lot of Wellie-ware,” says Banks. For added comfort, she recommends fur-lined, lower-cut Wellies from Tretorn. If you’re shopping ahead of your next big trip, try looking for ankle-high Wellies with added support.

Tretorn 1891

Blundstone

Leggings and cropped pants

“You know, athletic leisure is really big now in Ireland too,” says Banks. Comfortable and functional leggings are useful on active adventures like hiking, walking, cycling, golfing, or horse riding, or paired with an oversized Aran sweater and some simple sneakers for a day of urban exploring. Want something a little more structured? “Jeans are super acceptable and seen everywhere,” says Banks. Go for a cropped style or cuff them so your hems doesn’t get soggy.

Icebreaker

Merino 260 tech thermal leggings

Athleta

Rainier high-rise legging

Hudson

Noa high-rise straight ankle jean

Rag & Bone

Shea ankle relaxed straight jeans

Swimwear

Ireland isn’t really known for its pools or beaches, but it is developing quite the international appeal for wild swimming—that is, cold water swimming in lakes, rivers, and along shorelines. While I was foraging seaside with Kinsale Food Tours, I watched in awe as Irish locals jumped in for cold-water laps in the secluded bay. (The Complete Book of Wild Swimming in Ireland by Maureen McCoy and Paul McCambridge will teach you all you need to know.) If a cold water dunk sounds intimidating, an insulated swim suit may help.

Day bags

When venturing out for the day, Banks suggests bringing a bag to hold a water bottle, a rain jacket, and an extra layer. “But leave the umbrella at home—nobody uses umbrellas,” she adds. A good day bag should be large enough to have room for a few purchases, and include zippers for keeping your wallet close to you and secure. A water-repellent exterior is an added bonus, and sling straps can keep you hands-free. If you need to hold more, a tote bag is roomy enough to carry extra essentials you might need while traveling with kids.

As for things to pack in your day bag? “I strongly recommend the McKenna Guide for an insider’s guide to seeing the best of Ireland,” says Burke. She also recommends leaving your phone in your bag and going old school with a street map, especially in Dublin. “It’s really key to understand the different quarters that are driven by the different historical periods in the city.”

Winter travel often looks like one of two things: Battling against the cold weather or surrendering to the sun. Here at Condé Nast Traveler, it’s a mix of surf and ski, from the crystal clear waters of Costa Rica’s Peninsula Papagayo to the snow-capped mountains of Park City, Utah. For such outdoor adventures, we’re cataloging the very best in rash guards, waterproof shoes, goggles, and ski suits that will carry us from wave to slope. It’s not all winter games, though. Some of us plan to do little else besides spend time at home with our loved ones, keeping in mind the cashmere sweaters and sweatpants we intend to live in for days on end. Here’s where we’re going and what we’re packing this winter to stay comfortable and cozy from takeoff to touchdown.

Hitting the slopes in Park City, Utah

This winter, I’m headed on a ski trip to check out the brand new expansion of Deer Valley Ski Resort—which will make the space one of the largest ski resorts in North America. (In fact, it’s one of our best places to go in the US for 2026 for that very reason). I’m still on the hunt for the perfect accommodation for me, but some top contenders are the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley and Sundance Mountain Resort, either one a good home base for mornings on the slopes and long, bright days exploring (or heading to the spa). Aside from my checked luggage (to which I’ll probably share with my partner), I’ll be packing light in one of my favorites duffels, the chic Carra Portobello, with pieces I reach for without thinking—say, my soft Madeline Swan Crew for warming up. For the slopes: my Smith Squad goggles and the Halfdays merino base layers that disappear under my fun and red one-piece suit. And once I’ve hit enough runs—when all else winds down and everyone drifts toward town—I’ll pull on my Edelweiss Henley, slip into my Vallon Glacier shades, and settle easily into some après-ski fun. —Jessica Chapel, commerce writer

Hiking and eating our way through Lima and Mancora, Peru

Every December or January, I decamp to Peru for a couple of weeks—to see family and friends, but also to take advantage of those Southern Hemisphere summers. This year, in addition to surfing and eating my way through Lima, I’ll be heading north to the Mancora area for, well, more of the same, at a much slower pace. I always bring my Melissa rubber fisherman sandals, which pull double duty as swimming shoes at rocky beaches and cute sandals for when it’s time to throw on a cover-up and head to lunch.

For less waterlogged days—and for the journey down to Peru—my instant-classic leather M. Gemi flats are a shoe-in. Clothing-wise, I’m packing a capsule wardrobe so I can save room for things I want to buy (in Lima, I like to pay a visit to Mozdeh Matin’s showroom and Angela Kusen’s KA Concept Store, plus the Mercado Surquillo for food goods). On this trip, that’ll look like my Gil Rodriguez cotton button down tank (I have it in Black and Tomate), and a pair of perfectly worn-in Stan Ray shorts that I scored at Goodwill. I still need to firm up where we’re staying, but a friend just sent me a link to this beach house, which looks totally perfect. —Megan Spurrell, associate articles director

Returning home, Hallmark-movie-style, to Toronto

While I don’t have any exciting winter plans this year, I do have a trip booked: home for the holidays. I grew up outside of Toronto, and I’ll be heading back to Ontario mid-December for some family time, home-cooked meals, and hopefully a white Christmas. I’ll be dressed in my comfies the majority of the time I’m there, and right now I’m loving Mersea’s cashmere collection, specifically the Parma travel pants and Lugano sweater, for travel days and nights at home. My Roots sweatpants are also a classic every time I’m in the Great White North, because I’m never not going to support a Canadian-born brand! Of course, I’ll likely also go out for a few dinner-and-drinks dates with hometown friends while I’m back, so I’ll also be packing some more upscale outfits that are still warm and cozy. I have Rachel Antonoff’s espresso martini mockneck sweater in my Rent the Runway cart for an on-the-nose holiday ‘fit, and my brown Magnanni Audrey boots will surely complete the look (I’ve been getting so many compliments on them!). —Hannah Chubb, senior commerce editor

Surfing along Costa Rica’s Peninsula Papagayo

As the weather begins to turn, I’ve already reached denial over the arrival of winter—so much so, I’ve decided to fly down to Costa Rica for a final burst of sunshine before the holiday period sets in. I’ve visited the Central American country multiple times, and trips there always act as a salve and a reset for me, where days are largely structured around trying to learn how to surf, baking myself like an iguana under a palm tree, and trying to consume as much fresh papaya as I possibly can. This time, I’ll be staying at the Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo on the North Pacific coastline, meaning my wardrobe for the week will largely be items for the beach (the property is bookended by two), including my trusty Hunza G one piece, a playful pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses from Swedish brand Sun Buddies, and a classic L.L.Bean canvas tote bag to hold all the key necessities like books and sunscreen (I’m a big fan of this SPF by Lesse). For surfing, I’m making sure to bring a lightweight rash guard and the Ceremonia Guava Protect and Repair kit to take care of my hair in the aftermath. Lale Arikoglu, articles director

Experiencing the sublime at Banff National Park

This season I’m headed on a bucket-list trip to Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. Even better, I’m staying at the dreamiest hotel I’ve ever seen: The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. The hotel’s backdrop is practically a winter wonderland with its turquoise-blue lake and snow-covered mountains. I’ll be spending most of my time checking out the hotel’s brand-new Basin spa, but I’m also eager to explore its hiking trails. Packing for cold-weather destinations can be tricky, but I’ll definitely need some reliable gear to keep me warm in Alberta’s below-freezing temperatures. With this in mind, I’m packing plenty of warm layers that are lightweight and breathable enough for an active day outdoors. Alo’s Gold Rush puffer is pretty warm when it’s worn on top of a fleece pullover or a cashmere sweater, but It’s not too heavy or bulky to pack in a suitcase. I’ll be wearing these buttery-soft Luxform leggings from Set Active and my go-to sneakers from Hoka. The Clifton 10s are so comfortable and offer pretty decent traction for walking on icy and slippery sidewalks. And because there’s nothing I hate more than my ears being cold, I’m also planning to slip this thick headband in my carry-on. —Meaghan Kenny, commerce editor

Visiting friends and family in the sunshine state

Over the holidays, I’ll be heading down to Florida to visit friends and family on the west coast and in the panhandle. Coming from New York, I’m very much looking forward to the warmer weather in Venice, so I’ll be packing my flip-flops, SPF, and accessories for lots of outdoor walks. Over the summer I purchased my first pair of Havaianas in more than a decade—they were a staple in middle and high school, but I didn’t have much use for them in NYC and forgot what a great vacation shoe they are to wear to the beach or pool (and so affordable!). In other shoe news, I recently purchased another pair of Hoka Clifton 10s to use as a walking-around shoe that doubles as a workout class or running sneaker while on vacation. A momentous occasion in Bentonville, Arkansas

I am going to Bentonville, Arkansas in early December for a few days for something very special: my step-cousin’s husband’s Bar Mitzvah. Having missed their small, pre-Obergefell wedding, I wasn’t missing this! I don’t go on any longer trips without my Tumi Madeline cosmetic bag (my maroon one is still going strong after four years!) and its jewelry case. For walking around town, I will definitely be bringing my knit wool Uniqlo midi skirt (from a handful of seasons back; the brand has these now), which packs like a dream and is great for the day-to-night transition. I’m very proud to be nursing after 14 months, so this will be my second season with my Solly Baby Stormy Houndstooth nursing cover. I’ll have my maroon MZ Wallace Crosby Traveler for easy access to my stuff as my personal item, and my magenta waxed canvas Kanken bag (bought for a soul-filling solo trip to Ireland in 2017) as a diaper bag. For shoes, I’m definitely packing my patent ruby red Tieks. —Emily Newhouse, contributor, research

If you often find yourself unpacking a suitcase full of clothes you didn’t actually wear after a trip, it might be time to refresh your closet with some new wardrobe staples. After all, a trendy, wear-it-once outfit can only take you so far. The items you reach for most in your carry-on will almost always be the versatile basics that can comfortably take you from early morning breakfasts at your hotel to after-dinner cocktails. When you pack timeless wardrobe staples, you’ll never run out of things to wear or places to wear them. To help get you started, I’ve rounded up a list of the 12 wardrobe essentials I never travel without.

From the perfect everyday tee to a lightweight packable jacket, these basics below are the foundation of every packing list. Whether you’re searching for the fluffiest croissant in Paris or shopping your way through Tokyo, you can effortlessly build an outfit around these hard-working clothing staples.

The perfect tee

Let’s start off with the one item I literally never travel without, whether I’m headed on a beach vacation or staying at a friend’s house for a night: the perfect T-shirt. Soft, simple tees like these from Aritzia, Buck Mason, and Vuori will last in your closet for years and have that cozy, worn-in feeling you love. If you have no idea what to wear or don’t exactly know what’s on your agenda for the day, throwing on a basic tee is a safe bet. Plus, no one will notice if you rewear a T-shirt once (or twice) on a trip.

The white button-down

The next time you’re packing your suitcase, toss in a white button-down shirt. Whether you prefer linen, silk, oversized, or slightly fitted—pack it. It can be dressed up for a business dinner with a pair of slacks, worn casually with jeans while sightseeing during the day, or thrown over your bathing suit poolside (so there’s no need to pack an additional cover-up). A crisp white button-down is always in style and instantly makes you look more put together.

The day-to-night dress

I always slip a simple dress in my suitcase, even when I’m traveling on business or to a slightly colder climate. The best travel dresses can be worn casually during the day with a pair of sneakers, dressed up for dinner with a kitten heel, and even underneath a sweater as a long skirt. These lightweight dresses do it all and more, making them well worth any room they take up in your carry-on. (Pro tip: Hang your silk dresses up in your hotel or Airbnb bathroom while you take a hot shower to de-wrinkle them in a pinch.)

The comfortable sneaker

The ultimate must-pack shoe: a pair of white sneakers. Shoes take up a lot of space in your luggage and add extra weight. To limit how many pairs you need, a go-to white sneaker is essential—wear them with jeans, activewear, or a casual dress. My favorite pairs of sneakers are ones I can wear to the airport, during a light workout, and through a full day of walking. Brands like Adidas, Allbirds, and Reebok make classic pairs that are just as comfortable as they are versatile.

The trusted denim

No packing list is complete without a trusted pair of denim. Well-made jeans from Levi’s, Madewell, and Lucky Brand are built to last—even after dozens of cycles in the washing machine. For even more versatility, we recommend a straight leg jean in a medium or dark wash without any rips or raw hem. The pairs below offer enough stretch to keep you comfortable if some walking ends up on your itinerary.

The base layer

The key to dressing for colder weather is layering vests, cardigans, or thicker jackets over a lightweight base. This will help keep you warm and comfortable without overheating. A solid-colored long-sleeve shirt or a cashmere sweater are great options that aren’t too bulky to pack. Whether you’re headed on a ski trip or staying in a cozy cabin upstate, these super-soft base layers have you covered.

The relaxed trouser

If you’re traveling for business, a relaxed pair of trousers will take you from meetings to lunch to the hotel bar. A polished, tailored pair can be worn with loafers, sneakers, or a kitten heel with ease. And the best part: They are so comfy! The relaxed, loose fit around the legs of a good trouser makes them easy to wear all day long. The Effortless Pant from Aritzia is one of my top picks for its smooth material, slimming silhouette, and well-made, expensive feel. I’ve been wearing them nonstop lately—they look great for the office but are versatile and comfortable enough to wear in more casual settings too.

The packable jacket

Packing a jacket can be a bit of challenge—you don’t want yours to occupy all of the space in your carry-on. Wearing your heaviest coat on the plane is a great tip to avoid packing it, but you might want a more packable jacket with you too. These travel-friendly jackets layer well over sweaters, and can be folded up tightly to maximize suitcase space. FP Movement’s Pippa puffer is my go-to year-round for most trips—it’s incredibly lightweight and surprisingly warm. I’ve brought this with me to the Catskills, Vermont, and even Cape May.

The elevated shoe

When I’m tight on packing space, I try to cut back on footwear as it tends to be some of the heaviest items in my suitcase and one of the easiest to rewear. I try to pick just one elevated shoe to rely on for outfits when a sneaker is too casual. A sleek black boot will usually do the trick to help dress up an outfit without sacrificing comfort. If I want something slightly more elegant that I can wear with different types of dresses, I’ll pack one pair of kitten heels. These styles are low to the ground (no blisters here), but still look stylish enough to pair with formalwear.

The trench coat is an effortlessly chic wardrobe staple that we love for chilly or rainy cities like London or New York. Toss yours on over a hoodie on the plane for a cool airport look while also saving yourself from packing it.

The ballet flat

A ballet flat is a staple in every traveler’s closet. It might not be known as the most supportive walking shoe, but these options from M.Gemi, Margaux, Franco Sarto, and Rothy’s are surprisingly comfortable. I love how easy a ballet flat is to pack, and how it saves my tired feet for evenings when I don’t want to slip on a heel. Purses and bags are another essential that can be tricky to pack. I try to pack one white, black, or beige shoulder bag that matches everything and can travel with me from morning to night. Let’s be honest: When you’re gearing up for a six-plus-hour international flight and already feeling anxious about delays, tight connections, or misplaced luggage, deciding what to wear is probably the last thing on your mind. Add in the near-impossible challenge of catching sleep in an upright seat next to a snorer, and comfort quickly becomes your top priority.

Sure, a coordinated sweatsuit is always a crowd favorite, but today’s travel wardrobe goes far beyond that. Think luxuriously soft knits that feel like wearing a hug, compression fabrics that help keep circulation flowing, and buttery cashmere wraps perfect for turning your seat into a mini sanctuary—all ideal choices for long-haul flights. Below, find 23 brands whose clothes and accessories will make deciding what to wear on a long flight as easy and comfortable as possible.

Jump to:

Performance wear and athleisure

With activewear for your next yoga retreat, outerwear to brave the cold weather, and sweats to lounge in around the Airbnb, Alo offers everything you need to feel comfy and cozy while traveling. The popular brand designs its performance wear with movement in mind, so expect to find smooth, silky, breathable pieces that you’ll be comfortable in all day long. Traveler‘s commerce editor Meaghan Kenny is a big fan of the brand’s cropped Gold Rush puffer. “Its lightweight enough to pack in your suitcase, but still warm enough for an afternoon outdoors this winter,” she says.

Lululemon is a perennial favorite for everyday leggings, belt bags, and comfortable joggers. The rest of its athleisure is also worth the hype: These breathable half-zip sweatshirts and jackets can take you from the plane to the hotel gym effortlessly.

Vuori offers premium performance apparel inspired by the active coastal California lifestyle, and wants to offer a new perspective on the athleisure category as a whole. I admit, the clothing is some of the softest I’ve ever worn, which certainly sets itself apart from more traditional activewear brands like Nike or Adidas. Try Vuori’s joggers, shorts, and super-soft tees for an outfit that feels like pajamas, but looks respectable enough for the airport lounge.

When warm weather is in the forecast, the exercise dress comes back out. Often designed with shorts underneath and a built-in bra, the practical, sweat-wicking one-pieces are a great multi-purpose vacation outfit: Wear one on the plane with a jean jacket layered on top, then break it out again for a pickleball game or afternoon walking around to see the sights. Outdoor Voices makes a comfortable one with adjustable straps and a built-in shorts liner. If a dress doesn’t sound appealing, opt for the Zephyr pant—it’s made of a lightweight performance fabric that will serve you well in warm destinations.

Roots’ iconic fleece sets are a travel essential for anyone who values both softness and style. Made from a premium cotton-blend fleece that’s brushed on the inside for a lived-in feel, its sweatshirts and joggers strike the perfect balance between relaxed and refined. The silhouettes are slightly oversized yet structured enough to look intentional rather than sloppy. Flatlock seams prevent chafing during long flights, while ribbed cuffs and waistbands help retain their shape even after lots of wear. Available in earthy, nature-inspired tones, Roots’ loungewear makes comfort feel nostalgic, grounding travelers in the brand’s signature mix of craftsmanship and cozy Canadiana cool.

Barefoot Dreams is a Traveler favorite for cozy robes and slippers. The brand’s loungewear doesn’t disappoint, acting as a socially acceptable version of pajamas. If the only thing that comes to mind when you hear the name Spanx is shapewear, you’re missing out. The brand has extended its offerings over the years to include everything from work dresses to jeans and blazers. But for long-haul flights, we’re partial to the AirEssentials collection, which has a super-soft, drapey, scuba-like fabric. The pieces are produced in small batches to reduce waste, and are supremely comfortable—the Joon joggers are a personal favorite of mine, but for a more classic sweatpant, try the Harbor style. Other in-flight staples include the long-sleeve Witter T-shirt and Crosby classic hoodie.

Quince’s collection of 100% Mongolian cashmere sweaters, merino wool tees, and fine-gauge knit joggers redefines luxury in motion. The brand’s minimalist silhouettes—crewnecks, turtlenecks, and straight-leg lounge pants—are light enough for layering but warm enough for chilly cabins. The brands Grade-A cashmere is exceptionally soft yet pill-resistant, while the merino wool pieces regulate body temperature and wick moisture naturally. Designed to feel indulgent without the markup, Quince’s pieces roll up compactly for easy packing and drape effortlessly for all-day wear.

Former Traveler editor Noah Kaufman calls Ibex’s clothing “some of the nicest, most comfortable stuff I’ve ever put on.” Made of Ibex’s signature Merino wool fabric, the clothes are built to curb odor, and the fabric is naturally thermoregulating—meaning you can wear pieces year-round—and smooth against skin (no itchiness here). He’s been wearing a pair of ultra-soft joggers around the house, and says they’ll make a great addition to any long-haul flight uniform.
