The best hiking pants earn their place in our packing list the hard way—through scree scrambles, sweaty switchbacks, and the kind of bushwhacking that tests each and every seam. We’ve worn them on short hikes and multi-day backpacking trips, in hot and cold weather, through light rain and high-alpine winds. The through line of our editors’ favorites? They’re made with durable, breathable, and stretchy fabric (often a smart blend of recycled nylon and spandex or elastane). They also feature articulated knees for freedom of movement, and waistbands that don’t restrict but still stay put—be it with an integrated belt, drawcord, or internal drawstring.

From relaxed-fit cargo pants with zippered thigh pockets to ultralight, quick-drying softshell pants with a DWR (durable water-repellent) coating, our lineup of the best hiking pants balances true functionality and style. These pairs offer a full range of motion, UPF sun protection, and the versatility to roll up, zip off, and head straight from trail to town. We’re including a mix of our editors’ most-worn pairs and top-rated options from trusted brands like Arc’teryx, Prana, and Patagonia. Read on to find your new go-to pair for every outdoor adventure.

Condé Nast Traveler’s commerce director Madison Flager swears by the simplicity of these pants, and it’s easy to see why. Built from lightweight, breathable, and wind-resistant TTech fabric with a DWR finish, they shrug off light rain while staying fast-drying and flexible. According to Flager, the bi-stretch material “moves like a second skin,” keeping comfort high on long hikes and unpredictable weather days. Not to mention, its minimal elastic waistband with an internal drawcord makes mid-trail adjustments effortless.

Best for: Variable-weather adventures, all-day treks, carry capacity

Halfdays

Bastille trail pant

Pants so nice I had to buy them twice! I invested in Halfdays’s Bastille Trail Pant about six months ago, first in black, then in the oat milk colorway to go with its matching Nan Field lightweight cargo jacket. I packed them on trips out west and upstate New York for light hikes and longer treks alike. Proven to be made for every unpredictable moment on the trail, the pairs’ abrasion-resistant, four-way stretch fabric moves with you over rock scrambles, and the interior double‑weave loopers help prevent the fabric from sticking to my skin as I work up a sweat. Lightweight yet protective, these pants handle sun, brush, and rough terrain like a pro, and boast an integrated nylon belt that keeps the fit spot-on.

Best for: Technical hikes, all-day adventures

Image may contain: Clothing, Pants, Shorts, and Skirt

Senior features editor Megan Spurrell wore these hiking pants through long days in the Brazilian Pantanal and was more than impressed with how they performed in heat, humidity, and brush. “I loved how protective yet light and breathable they were, and the fact that the design felt a little more streetwear-adjacent than others I’ve seen,” says Spurrell. Large, thoughtful pockets stay accessible without flapping, and adjusters at the waist and cuffs help keep comfortability, even at mid-hike. The cut reads cleaner and more intentional than typical trail pants, so they aren’t just functional, but they look good too.

Best for: Warm‑weather hikes, travel with varied terrain, carrying more at-the-ready essentials

Image may contain: Clothing, Pants, and Jeans

Whether you’re an avid hiker or a beginner, chances are you’ve heard about Arc’teryx’s best-selling Leutia Pants—known for their exceptionally lightweight, water-resistant softshell design with a subtle swish in movement. Associate social media manager Bridget Knowles is happy to own them: “We’re talking top-tier hiking pants here that have seen and can do it all—with an aesthetic range that suits everything from posting up at a wine bar on the weekend (my ornamental life) to trekking Kilimanjaro (my intended life),” says Knowles. The airy, straight silhouette feels modern and effortless, and they blend technical performance with all the right proportions.

Best for: Travel that straddles city and trail, warm-weather hikes

Image may contain: Clothing, and Pants

“If you want a pant that feels at home on both trails and city streets, this is it,” says Flager. Another favorite of hers, the Transit Tech fabric is lightweight, breathable, and wind‑resistant, with a durable water‑repellent finish to wick away light rain, and a bi‑stretch build that dries fast and stays comfortable over long outings. Flager vouches for the design of this pair, with fabric genuinely designed to keep you comfortable—and with three secure pockets, including a zip pocket, any everyday essential is easy to keep close. Another plus: The pants are complete with a minimal elastic waistband with an internal drawcord and semi‑elastic cuffs for a truly easy on-and-off wear.

Best for: Variable weather days, active travel, effortless yet refined movement

Prana

Stretch Zion cargo pant

If you like a little structure in your hiking kit, these top-rated cargo pants from Prana are for you. The Stretch Zion fabric is known (and highly-reviewed by many) for its durability, and here it’s reinforced with double-layered knees and a relaxed straight leg that moves easily uphill. Deep cargo pockets and secure closures mean you won’t be digging around for essentials mid-trail, and the adjustable waist and bungee hems help fine-tune the fit.

Best for: Cooler-weather hikes, shoulder-season travel (where weather can be more unpredictable), true abrasion resistance

Image may contain: Clothing, Pants, and Coat

Free People

In the Wild pants

FP Movement’s In The Wild pants are the ultimate “yes, and” for your wardrobe. They offer serious on-the-trail function—we’re talking reinforced, tear-resistant woven fabric and a water-resistant finish—but they refuse to look like your typical, sometimes boring, gear. With built-in UPF protection for high sun-exposure days and drop-in cargo-style pockets that actually hold your life together, they bridge the gap between utility and style.. Whether you’re actually scaling a peak or just navigating a drizzly farmer’s market, the massive range of vibrant and fun colorways ensures you’ll look anything but “technical.”

Best for: Sunny hikes, light rain, a fashion-forward silhouette

Image may contain: Clothing, Pants, and Jeans

Athleta

Skyline high-rise barrel leg pants

These are the pants you reach for when the plan is loosely “outdoors,” but dinner reservations might still be involved. One of Traveler‘s most-trusted brands, Athleta’s high-rise pants boasts a barrel leg design that lends to a more directional, modern shape, while the woven fabric has enough stretch to handle unpaved paths and long walks. They’re water-resistant with built-in UPF protection, so a little drizzle or sun won’t derail the day. Utility pockets add even more swift function.

Best for: Design-minded hikers, gentle terrain or lighter treks on weekend escapes that blur trail and town

Image may contain: Clothing, Shorts, Swimming Trunks, and Skirt

Cotopaxi

Losdos zip-off pant

Crafted from a stretchy, moisture-wicking recycled blend with UPF 50+ protection, these aren’t your dad’s clunky convertibles. They are Cotopaxi’s masterclass in modularity: When the ridge line heats up, the legs zip off into breezy 4-inch shorts. The genius part? The cargo pockets double as integrated stuff sacks for the detachable bottom halves, and color-coded zippers mean you won’t be fumbling with mismatched hemlines when the sun goes down. Finished with a carabiner-ready elastic waist and cinchable cuffs that pivot from trail-ready to jogger-chic, they’re as technical as they are playful. Speaking of playful, they come in various unique (and neutral) colorways.

Best for: Variable forecasts, strong UPF protection, high-alpine terrain, hikers who prefer adaptable layers over outfit changes

Image may contain: Clothing, Pants, and Jeans

Helly Hansen

Loke pants 2.0

There’s a reason these are Helly Hansen’s hiking MVPs. Built for those bad-weather, “maybe I should have stayed in the tent” kind of days, these pull-on pants boast iconic Helly Tech performance in a featherweight, 2.5-layer shell. They don’t just handle the weather; but they shut it out with a fully seam-sealed, waterproof, and windproof barrier that still lets your skin breathe. Thoughtful details make the difference: zippered leg gussets mean you’re not wrestling your hiking boots to get them on, while the adjustable elastic waist and deep, zippered pockets ensure both your fit and your gear stay exactly where they belong.

Best for: Rainy hikes, windy ridges, camping trips, keeping outside elements away from your skin

Image may contain: Clothing, and Pants

Patagonia

Caliza rock pants

These pants from Patagonia are a no-brainer for more technical hikes. They’re designed specifically for rock climbing, ensuring the durable fabric will protect you from the elements you might encounter. The lightweight, regenerative organic-certified cotton-spandex blend regulates temperature and offers four-way stretch for all-day comfort. High-rated for a reason—the pants’ articulated patterns and a contoured knit waistband sit smoothly under a harness or pack, while drop-in front and rear pockets lie flat for maximum comfort. There’s also snap-adjustable cuffs that let climbers fine-tune the fit to their preference. There are no zippered pockets on these, so you might need a hiking backpack or fanny pack with you for any extra essentials you want to keep handy.

Best for: Climbing, adventures that demand freedom of movement

FAQ:

What features should I look for in the best hiking pants?

Look for hiking pants that offer durability and versatility, and are made with abrasion-resistant fabrics. Pants like the Cotopaxi Losdos or Halfdays Bastille Trail paint are extremely comfortable, using nylon blends, double-layered knees, and articulated patterns to withstand rocks, brush, and repeated use. Stretch and mobility matter, too: The most durable pants move with you without tearing, making them reliable for rugged trails, technical climbs, and longer outdoor adventures.

What are the best hiking pants for cold weather?

It depends on the hike. For high-altitude, alpine-forward treks or windy ridges, windproof options like the Helly Hansen Loke Pants are ideal. For winter forest treks, layer-friendly pants like the Patagonia Caliza pair keep you warm without restricting movement. On wet or variable-weather hikes, water-resistant, quick-drying fabrics, like that of Janji’s WW Transit Tech pants are your best bet.

The perfect ski suit isn’t just about functionality and practicality—it’s about style, too. Whether you’re a skier or snowboarder carving down the slopes or sipping après-ski cocktails by the fire, your ski one-piece can, and perhaps should, make a statement. While your face might be hidden behind goggles and a mask, a great ski suit is an agent of showcasing taste. So much so, it can even spark new friendships on the mountain. Personally, I’ve complimented heaps of fashionable riders—and some passing by on ski lifts or on the base of the mountain have called out the brands of my gear. (“I love your suit! That’s the new Half Days, right?”) From Aspen to Upstate New York, kind exchanges like this on the slopes have blossomed into new friends meeting for champagne and DJ sets at nearby après ski hotspots.

From vibrant color-block designs to retro-inspired one-pieces, this winter season’s ski collections offer sleek, comfortable, and high-performance suits that can easily transition from the mountain to outdoor après-hour fun. And while classic options from brands like The North Face never go out of style, there are some innovations from labels like Goldbergh and Gsou Snow that are raising the bar, too. So, pack your personality along with your gear and be ready to turn heads both on and off the mountain.

Below, we’ve rounded up our picks of the best ski suits that combine warmth, style, and flair—all guaranteed to make you the talk of your next winter getaway.

This cooler is waterproof, leakproof, and it can even float, so it’s perfect for boat trips and beach days. It comes in four different sizes that can hold up to 12, 20, 30, or 40 cans. I tested out the smallest size, and it held enough drinks for my party of six. If you’re packing food as well, I’d say it could fit sandwiches and snacks for three to four people, depending on how hungry you are. I accidentally left some seltzers in the cooler overnight after a trip to the beach and when I opened it up the next morning the cans were still cold to the touch. This was only with two or three small ice packs in the cooler, but if you really fill it up with more ice, the contents can stay cool for up to two days.

The RTIC Soft Pack Cooler is fully waterproof; the only downside to the leakproof zipper is that it can be pretty difficult to open and close. The cooler itself is easy to carry while walking a few blocks to the beach and thanks to the crossbody shoulder strap, my hands remained free for beach towels and chairs. Since it’s a soft-shell design, it’s very lightweight, though the larger sizes will be heavier, of course: the smallest size available is 2.4 pounds when empty and the largest is 5.5 pounds. Considering how durable and long-lasting this cooler is, it’s pretty impressive that it can float. According to online reviews, it can even withstand floating behind a whitewater raft over rapids. I can’t wait to take it out with me paddleboarding. —Hannah Towey, associate editor, transportation and travel news

For a proper surf suit, this Cynthia Rowley number is slinky and protective, and really well made. However, it’s a high (think ’80s-style) front cut and very revealing back. If that’s the fit you want, it’s the most comfortable suit of the style we’ve found (and those patterns can’t be beat).

Sunscreen

The most important thing in our surf bags is our sunscreen collection. I’ve waxed poetic about my love for Kinfield sunscreen time and time again. I have an allergy to most chemical sunscreens and have long searched for a mineral sunscreen that’s easy to apply and doesn’t leave me looking chalky. I use Kinfield’s waterproof Daily Dew on my face, and Cloud Cover on the parts of my body not covered by a wetsuit. Spurrell doesn’t have the same allergy as me, but has also found herself gravitating toward Kinfield’s reef-safe mineral formulas. But another glowy sweat- and water-resistant option she loves is Supergoop’s body Glowscreen.

If you don’t care for that sheen, Sun Bum makes a highly moisturizing SPF. For an extra layer of protection, I like swiping Sun Bum’s Mineral Stick across my nose, cheeks, and hands before I jump in the water. I usually swipe it across my lips, too, while Spurrell opts for the original lip balm.

Hats

This is one category I’ll admit we’re still figuring out. I’ve tried out a few different kinds of surf hats—this one’s too floppy, that one can’t survive a wipeout—and still haven’t found the porridge that’s just right for me. However, my husband (also surf-obsessed) has been rocking the Dakine Surf Hat all summer. He says it’s really secure, but so comfortable that he forgets he’s wearing it. He just wishes the bill was a bit longer to block out more sun.

One I’ve yet to try but have been eyeing is the Patagonia surf brim hat, because several other students and instructors at the surf school swear by how secure and comfortable it is. If you’re a newbie, you’ll want something like the Dakine or Patagonia cap which is designed to stay put even if you take a few tumbles. Both hats are adjustable (good thing, since both are technically for men, and seem to be a bit larger).

Hair care

Now onto the unexpected but essential products we’ve come to swear by: great, protective hair care items. Right after hopping out of the water following a great morning surf session, and just before plopping onto the sand for a well-deserved afternoon of unwinding, my friends and I break out the leave-in conditioners and Tangle Teezers (a good ole Wet Brush also does the trick). Smelling the guava-rich Ceremonia and the beachy banana Sun Bum is one of my favorite post-surf sensory experiences, and whenever I use the products at home, it transports me right back to the sand.

Accessories

I recently learned the term “après-surf” from the aforementioned brand Atmosea, and now I can’t stop saying it. I’ve been using it as a catch-all for the comfy apparel I like to throw on after a surf—like my Billabong board shorts that, in my opinion, go with everything (leopard print is a neutral, I swear). Another favorite: the classic Patagonia baggie shorts, particularly in this ‘80s shade of teal. Both pairs of shorts are loose, adjustable, and most importantly, comfortable to throw on when you’re wet. After some hair care, a dad cap is essential for locking in moisture and shielding your eyes and face from additional rays while you take that well-deserved nap. When it’s time to head home, you’ll want to throw your wetsuits in a dry bag, and the medium Sea to Summit is our current favorite. For everything else, the Junes mesh tote is a lifesaver—not only because it fits a lot more than you’d expect, but because the sand easily shakes out as you walk.

More surf essentials we love

I’d be remiss not to mention the SabaSurf wax I’ve been using this summer. It’s super tacky, smells amazing, and is unique in that it works in all water temperatures. For the foamie boards that I surf on, I only need a top coat, but if you’re working with a hard top board, they sell it in bundles so you can get both your base and top together.

One last lifesaver? These Nuun electrolyte tabs. They’re handy for when you’ve been in the “just one last wave” mindset for an hour and the leg cramps start to kick in.

Last winter, last-minute holiday shopping had me scurrying to find a couple more gifts for loved ones—useful ones that wouldn’t be buried in the storage closet come January. Lo and behold, an impromptu Costco run placed me right in front of the perfect find: a dwindling display of massage guns. Desperate to get in and out of the store quickly, I tossed one into my shopping cart and merrily checked a giftee off my list. Clearly, I made the right choice, as the gift’s recipients couldn’t stop singing its praises after unboxing and giving it a whirl. Their rave review had me itching for one of my own—and once I finally acquired one, I understood what all the hype was about.

I often get stiff arms and legs during long-distance road trips, so the massager has become a welcomed addition to my packing list; it wastes no time in relaxing muscle tightness. I’ve experienced instant neck and back relief after using it to target hard-to-reach areas—exactly why I’m excited to bring it on flights, and put it to use if and when I get a crick in my neck after sleeping incorrectly, or a sore back from slouching in my seat. With hotel and Airbnb beds, you never quite know what you’re going to get—most are delightful, but some are a pain in the rear. My Renpho R3 Active Massage Gun hits all the right spots in times of discomfort.

The portable percussion massager, lightweight enough to tuck away in my carry-on, aggressively goes to war on sore spots and spasms as soon as I power that baby up. When my body gives out on me during a long flight, road trip, or vacation—sore muscles and leg cramps are common—I can whip it out. It’s come to my rescue after getting a stiff back from hauling heavy luggage through the airport, sitting uncomfortably for hours on a cramped economy flight, and driving lengthy distances with barely any leg room. I’ve discovered that it’s a mighty defense against discomfort while away, and so now, I can’t travel without it.

My massage gun is advertised as one that “delivers pre-post workout relaxation” on Renpho’s site, and while it’d be great for athletes or active travelers, for me, it’s a fierce travel companion that offers on-the-go comfort and relief. Nestled snugly inside the sturdy case it came with, it squeezes neatly in between my other belongings.

Renpho Active massage gun

Weight: 1.5 pounds
Dimensions: 7.3″ x 5.8″ x 2.3″

Equipped with a battery life that lasts for hours, five adjustable speeds, and five different massage heads, I feel battle-ready well before using it to knock out painful knots and kinks. Noise levels can get a little loud depending on intensity, but even the lowest intensity level can provide a decent deep-tissue massage without disturbing the peace.

Renpho’s site describes it as “a great entry-level massage gun” that “is portable but offers a similar output of percussion as the advanced model with thermal and cool plates to soothe the body.” In other words, it’s a powerful machine that’s delivered in a petite package—compact, easy to use, and it gives one heck of a deep-tissue massage.

Other massage guns we recommend

If you’re not feeling this particular massage gun, you’ve still got plenty of options. One of these travel-friendly percussion massagers may be more your speed.

TheraGun Mini

With tons of online buzz and a compact size, I can see why the Theragun Mini made Oprah’s Favorite Things 2022 list. At 5.55″ x 4.92″ x 1.93″, the massage gun is compact enough to fit into a large purse or backpack. It also features three speeds, comes with three attachments, and is Bluetooth-compatible; owners can find pain relief–promoting wellness routines on Therabody’s app.

Hyperice Hypervolt Go 2

Dubbed a travel essential by reviewers and Traveler editors alike, I had to include Hyperice’s mini massage gun model on the list. The ultra-portable device is said to be a “silent painkiller” with its QuietGlide technology, and features three percussion speeds and two attachments. At 1.5 pounds, it’s the same weight as Renpho’s Active massage gun.

Toloco Massage Gun Mini

I’m mostly intrigued by the design of this mini massage gun. The base reminds me of those thermal cups you use for soup and coffee, so I can only assume that it’s easy to carry around. The lightweight massager comes with just four attachments but features a total of six built-in speeds—it is small but mighty.

Homedics Therapist Select Percussion Massager

This percussion massager is backed with a 30-day guarantee, and based on what I’ve heard about it from friends and read in reviews, it’s well worth the investment and is like having your own little massage therapist. The device features three intensity levels and comes with four attachments.

Even if you have status on every airline under the sun, jet lag is no joke. Whenever I find myself embracing my inner zombie too much, I do two things: hike and hydrate. Both activities instantly wake me up. It doesn’t matter where I am—and as a travel writer, I go through countries like a golden retriever goes through tennis balls—this is my modus operandi. Walk, water, repeat. That said, I don’t carry cumbersome water bottles that leak or constantly need refilling. Whether I’m hiking the Appalachian Trail or exploring Incan ruins in the Andes, the Camelbak M.U.L.E. Hydration Pack is always on my back.

My friend Lian, a mountain biking Matthew McConnaughey look-alike from Cape Town, first introduced me to Camelbak’s hydration packs. While borrowing one of his bags to bag a peak in South Africa, I discovered I loved being able to comfortably carry three liters of water and stay hydrated, hands free. So, the second my return flight touched down at JFK, I was on my phone, ordering the best-selling Camelbak M.U.L.E. Hydration Pack (the letters stand for Medium to Ultra Long Endeavors). I bought it on Amazon—where it has an impressive 4.8-star average rating from more than 2,200 reviews—because that’s where it was cheapest. Currently, it’s $115.

My first trip with the Camelbak M.U.L.E. Hydration Pack was to Botswana, where I used it on Natural Selection’s seven-day cycling safari. While this pack is designed for mountain biking, it’s also ideal for hiking, paddleboarding, and kayaking because it can easily fit a lightweight rain jacket, snacks, and sunscreen. There’s also a convenient and secure side pocket for my phone, and the larger front exterior pocket is great for carrying a wet bathing suit or umbrella.

Camelbak M.U.L.E. Hydration Pack

While it’s great for gallivanting in Mother Nature, I don’t just use this bag outdoors. It’s become my go-to personal item when I fly. I just make sure I empty the bladder before going through TSA. Then, when I arrive at my destination, I take the bladder out altogether and use it as a daypack for everything from museum-hopping in Paris to exploring Incan ruins in Peru. Regardless of how much stuff I’m carrying (this bag holds 12 liters total) I never have back or shoulder issues. The adjustable sternum strap and hip belt ensure that weight is evenly distributed, and the adjustable shoulder straps are pleasantly padded.

I also love that this bag’s harness is made of a breathable mesh so I stay cool even if I find myself hiking in 100 percent humidity. I definitely sweat less when I’m wearing the Camelbak M.U.L.E. Hydration Pack—the back panel has sufficient air flow—than I do when I’m wearing other backpacks that lack ventilation. Of course, in addition to being comfortable and easy to wear, this bag doubles as a water bottle.

Camelbak Crux cleaning kit

The BPA-free bladder holds 100 ounces or approximately 3 liters. I always fill it with good ol’ H2O, but in theory, you could fill it with any cool or room temperature liquid and rest assured that it won’t leak a single drop. When you’re ready for a drink, simply flip the switch on the straw (you can do this with your teeth, making it hands-free) and sip. Thanks to the magnetic tube trap, the straw stays in place.

There’s only one downside to the Camelbak M.U.L.E. Hydration Pack: It can’t go in the dishwasher. Still, cleaning it only takes five minutes. I use Camelbak’s Crux cleaning kit. Available for $22, it has a 4.7-star average rating and is such a bestseller that more than 1,000 were sold last month alone. Of course, you don’t need to buy the kit—soapy water and a bendy brush work just as well.

Most days, you’ll find me with my trusty water bottle in tow, whether I’m at home, at the gym, or running errands. But when I’m traveling, staying hydrating becomes trickier. Destinations like Mexico and Thailand are known to have questionable drinking water, so in the past when I was abroad, I’d purchase bottled water to mitigate the risk. As of this summer, I have officially ditched the plastic, thanks to the LifeStraw Go Series filtered water bottle.

In June, I spent four days in San Pancho, Mexico, on a press trip with LifeStraw putting this water bottle to the test. I carried it with me everywhere: It was on the table at dinner, next to my beach towel while I dove under the waves, and tucked away in my sling bag on a birdwatching tour. I’d fill up in the sink in my hotel room or at a tap in a public restroom without thinking about whether or not the water was potable. Once I returned to my home in Utah, I started using it on short day hikes and other outdoor excursions, filling it up right from a stream.

My favorite features are the soft mouthpiece and screw-on lid to keep it free of debris, but the mouthpiece can take a few days to adjust to. Unlike a standard water bottle, it’s a bit harder to drink out of (the water does have to go through a filter, after all). This has helped me take smaller, more frequent sips rather than chugging it down when I’m already dehydrated.

The LifeStraw Go Series bottle’s handle on the lid makes it easy to carry, and it comes in both BPA-free plastic (22 ounce or one liter sizes) and stainless steel (24 ounce or one liter sizes). I went big for this water bottle and chose the whopping one liter version because I know the only way I’ll adequately hydrate is by keeping water on hand at all times. While it’s a bit big for everyday use—it’s wider than comfortable for my small hands—I loved the extra capacity while traveling, when you never know when you can fill up next. I also opted for the heavier, stainless steel version (what can I say, I love ice cold water); at 1.3 pounds, I’ve avoided bringing it on long hikes. If you want a more versatile bottle, the large plastic one only weighs half a pound.

LifeStraw Go Series BPA-free filtered water bottle

But what really sets this reusable water bottle apart from others is the two-part filter system: The main filter gets rid of contaminants like parasites, bacteria, microplastics, and silt, while the activated charcoal filter purifies the taste and smell. The main filter will last you 1,000 gallons. But you don’t need to keep track of how much water you’re drinking to know when it’s time for a change: When the filter is no longer effective, it won’t allow any water to pass through. The charcoal filter doesn’t last quite as long—26 gallons, or approximately two months of daily use, according to LifeStraw. You can purchase replacement filters on the brand’s website.

To increase the lifespan, you can take out the filter when you’re not worried about the safety of your drinking water. But if you’ve ever used the bottle with potentially contaminated water, just be sure to give it a good cleaning beforehand to ensure all the components are free of bacteria. Also worth noting: When you have the filter installed, you shouldn’t use electrolyte mix or other powders.

From New York to London, Paris, Dubai, Miami, Tokyo, Las Vegas, LA, and back, Nigel Sylvester knows his way through an airport. He also doesn’t shy away from an adventure—most times, he’s traveling with his BMX bike. Hailing from Queens, New York, the professional BMX athlete has traveled all over the world and gave a first-person point of view of his life in his travel series GO. The web series transports Nigel and his bicycle to thrill-seeking experiences, including jumping out of a plane over the Dubai desert with his bike in hand.

Sylvester’s career doesn’t stop at BMX, though. He is also a content creator, entrepreneur, filmmaker, and fashion enthusiast, recently walking in Colm Dillane’s KidSuper Men’s Spring 2023 Paris Fashion Week show. In 2021, he became the first professional BMX athlete to be signed by Jordan Brand.

Since BMX is still a fairly niche sport, there are challenges that come with carrying a bike around the world. In the past, Sylvester would repurpose standard golf bags that worked best for his travel needs, but now, thanks to a new collaboration with Rimowa, he’ll have an easier time getting his bike around.

I caught up with Sylvester to find out what inspired him to create a bike case with the storied luggage brand, hear more about his travel experiences from his global travel series Go, and find out which Air Jordan shoe is his favorite to travel with.

When did you start riding BMX and what were those early days like?

I started riding BMX seriously around the age of 12; those days were great. I’m a kid growing up in Laurelton, Queens, with Caribbean parents, both my mom and my dad are from Grenada. I’m first-generation. The household was kind of strict, but they gave me flexibility to go out and ride as much as possible as long as I was doing well in school. I was very curious, I would always make ramps out of old plywood and cinder blocks or old tires. I would go to my local park and grind the benches and ride around my neighborhood and hit curb cuts, jump off the sidewalks and pretty much anything I can get my bike on. Those days were fun, carefree, and just full of exploration.

Was there any diversity in BMX when you got started? What challenges came with being a Black BMX rider?

BMX is a predominantly white sport. My first touch point with a professional BMX setting was watching it on TV or going to my local store and buying a BMX Plus magazine. As I got more and more into the sport and started to understand the different verticals within the sport, I started to find more BMX athletes of color which was super dope. There were kids in my neighborhood and we all rode BMX bikes, but that was very niche and very singular to my neighborhood. As I started to venture outside of my neighborhood, I found more BMX athletes that looked like me and started to get introduced to BMX pros who came from similar neighborhoods and had similar experiences. They allowed me to come into their circle and helped raise me in a sense and teach me about the world of BMX. That forced me to step my game up tremendously.

Summer is one of the most anticipated seasons of the year, and one of the busiest for travel. It comes as no surprise the Traveler out of office calendar has been full, with editors setting off on vacations near and far: babymoons in Iceland, destination weddings in Italy, and road trips through Maine included. Along the way, we’ve picked up some stellar travel gear—including a few quality summer staples to help beat the sometimes unbearable heat. Below, our editors share the tried-and-true products they’ve used the most this season, from waterproof sandals and skincare to lightweight linens and holy grail hair products. Some items are best suited to warm-weather vacations, while others will find a home in your suitcase year-round; all, though, come highly recommended by our team. Whether you’re planning a beach trip and looking for a new swimsuit or are in need of a new weekender bag, we’ve got you covered.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Travel-friendly purses, waterproof sandals, and summer body cream

On a recent trip to Europe, I knew long days spent sightseeing would be on the agenda. The weather was a little too warm for sneakers some days, so I opted for a water-friendly sandal from Reef with adjustable straps around the ankle. These sandals were a lifesaver: stylish and comfortable, they paired well with almost everything I packed—including the viral Lululemon belt bag. It was the perfect crossbody to keep my phone, wallet, and small essentials organized while exploring London for the first time.

Another favorite bag of mine this summer is Calpak’s new large Luka duffel. I’ve raved about the brand’s original Luka duffel for overnight stays and as my personal item on flights, but now this new size is ideal for extended weekends. It holds several outfits, a few pairs of shoes, and even fits my bulkier hair tools. And last but not least, I’ve been loving the Sol de Janiero Bum Bum cream—it smells like summer and keeps my skin hydrated all day long. —Meaghan Kenny, associate commerce editor

Surf gear, skincare staples, and slides

Maybe it’s because I’m a Cancer, but I come alive in summer—I have barely stopped moving. The good news is that I’ve found a few things that can keep up. For a couple of weeks bopping around Europe in June, my Ganni bike shorts, Sabah El Paso slides, and a linen dress from Free People’s vacation edit were perfect for hot days with lots of walking (or pool days with none at all). Now that I’m home in New York City, I’ve been surfing in the Rockaways most weekends, and loving my Seea bodysuit-style wetsuit. It’s perfect for protecting against chafing on a waxed-up board but is thin enough for hot summer temps and warm water. If I’m sticking around after surfing for a full beach day, my Vanessa Mooney bikini is the go-to—all their cuts are comfy and flattering, but the high-waisted are my favorite (in good news for readers and bad news for me, the suit I bought full price a couple of months ago is already on sale). A few other recurring cast members this summer are hair and skin products that I use to counteract all that time in the sun: Ceremonia and Olaplex deep conditioners, Kinfield and Beach Bum sunscreen, Mario Badescu coconut oil, and an army of Grown Alchemist serums and face oils.Megan Spurrell, senior editor

Bucket bags, lightweight maternity wear, and hair accessories

I’m all about looking chic and stylish this summer with minimal effort. I’ve found myself relying on accessories to take my look up a notch, allowing me to rotate through my more casual, comfortable wardrobe without shame. When I want to rock a flowy, simple summer dress, I love to pair it with my Catalina Pearl necklace which elevates the entire look and feel. I’m also currently loving this Liv bucket bag which never fails to score a compliment and is the perfect multi-use bag whether you’re hitting the park for a picnic with friends or out to date night. Finally, after a long day out with friends, when you’ve showered off the sweat of the day and want to veg out on your couch but still keep it cute? There is truly nothing more cozy than the Cloud Collection matching lounge set from Bumpsuit. The parachute pants are roomy and bold, and the crop tee is perfectly buttery. But my ultimate summer accessory? This incredible braided headband has gotten me through so many unwashed hair days. The hardest part is to get the right color match, but once you do, you can create a 15-minute up-do that looks like you spent hours watching YouTube hair tutorials to master. —Lara Kramer, global director of audience development, social, and analytics

Sunscreen, phone accessories, and airy clothing

My first full summer on the east coast can be summed up into two words: busy and hot. Before I step out of my apartment I make sure I’m covered in sunscreen from head to toe. For my face, I stick with my old reliable, Black Girl sunscreen, and for the rest of my body, I’ve been using the Bod Guard from Dune. When it comes to sunscreens I steer clear of anything that’s sticky or leaves a white cast after I apply it; luckily, both of these fit the bill. I use a higher SPF on my face than the rest so as to not provoke any acne scarring or dark marks. I noticed very early into the summer that less is best—hands-free is the only way I’m exploring the city, so, my Dagne Dover phone sling has been my favorite accessory this summer. It fits my wallet, key, phone, and lip balm without bulging. It has mesh, plush fabric that keeps my belongings safe, dry, and comfortable on my side no matter how much I’m moving. Sticking with the less is the best rule, I’m keeping everything light and airy when it comes to my wardrobe. My summer staple item has been skorts. I don’t have many flowy, romantic pieces in my wardrobe, but skorts offer that aesthetic while still being functional. I especially love how I can walk around the city in what looks like a skirt without the dread of having a Marilyn Monroe subway grate moment. —Paris Wilson, commerce producer

Portable fans, comfy shoes, and sling bags

While June was pretty mild this year, NYC’s hot, sticky summer days have arrived in full force, which makes me extra thankful to own this portable neck fan. I’ve worn it on my commute to keep the sweat (somewhat) at bay on subway platforms, and have brought it with me to the park and beach, too. For theme park visits or outdoor concerts, I like a smaller handheld fan like this one, which fits easily inside the Uniqlo sling bag (I finally jumped on the bandwagon, and let me tell you, it is roomy). On the shoe front, Tevas are my go-to sandal during summertime, but I’ve also been loving these slip-on sneakers from Naot—they’re super comfortable out of the box, with no break-in time needed. Also on my packing lists this summer: Dr. Jart’s Ceramidin cream, to soothe any heat-irritated skin, Lanolips Multi-Balm, and a good pair of sunnies, like this round style from Shinola. —Madison Flager, senior commerce editor

Athletic equipment and SPF

This summer, I’ve started to embrace my competitive side by getting into tennis. It’s been a great way to get outdoors and be social while also getting some exercise. As an advanced beginner player, this Head Graphene Racquet has been a perfect choice—plus it packs really easily into an airline carry-on bag. So far, I’ve brought it along on summer trips to St. Louis, Milwaukee, and Rhode Island. While I’m out in the full sun of the court, Supergoop’s Glow Stick sunscreen has been a handy option for reapplying my SPF quickly between sets. —Jessica Puckett, senior editor, transportation and travel news

Cruise ship–sourced skincare products

I’ve never been a skincare buff, to the point that I’ve often bragged about my near-exclusive use of Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ over the last 15 years. But this summer, thanks to two offerings from the Irene Forte Skincare line, I’ve finally learned what the hype is all about. I’ll dab on the hibiscus serum, a light, jelly-like serum, in the morning after I’ve washed my face, then seal it in around my eyes with a bit of the olive eye cream. Both brighten my face and feel like a whisper on the skin—ideal, since I hate the feeling of too much of anything on my face—and carry just a hint of natural fragrance. (Forte is the wellness consultant for Rocco Forte Hotels, the luxe hotel group founded by her father 35 years ago—and many of the main ingredients in her vegan line are grown on the grounds of Verdura Resort, at the property’s organic farm.)
