The red rock arches of Moab have become as synonymous with Utah as the state’s dry, powdery snow. But while luxury hotels have sprouted around the state’s top ski resorts, the lodging around Arches and Canyonlands national parks has remained decidedly modest. Moab’s functional inns and bare-bones campsites are fine for hard chargers who are just looking for a place to sleep between climbs or long days of mountain biking. But in the wake of the pandemic—and the collective rediscovery it spurred of America’s natural beauty—a new kind of soft-adventure seeker has alighted on this funky desert town, prompting fresh demand for a different kind of accommodation.
That’s where ULUM Moab, which opened in April, comes in. A chic new venture from the folks behind the wildly popular Under Canvas, known for its safari-inspired tented camps, it dials up the luxury and amenities of its sibling brand to offer a full resort experience—glamping-style.
Ulum Moab’s 50 tents surround a modern concrete-and-glass lodge whose rusty hues match the landscape. There is a full-service kitchen serving up seasonal bites; three dipping pools of varying temperatures; and a shop that stocks some of the same brands you’ll find in your tent, including Aesop, Vuori, and Parachute Home. The accommodations also contain evaporative coolers and wood-burning stoves to keep guests comfortable in the unpredictable desert weather. And at nearly 400 square feet, there’s plenty of room to stretch out after a private canyoneering experience with the local outfitter Desert Highlights (set it up at the front desk), so you’ll be ready to hit the trail again at daybreak.
More glamping getaways
There’s more to come in this space: Opening this winter in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Autocamp Asheville is the latest outpost from the popular Airstream brand will debut Bambis, a diminutive, lightweight version of the iconic aluminum trailers. They’ll be decked out by local design firm Shelter Collective.
Family-owned French company Huttopia Wine Country is bringing crepes and croissants to the rolling hills of Northern California’s Lake County this month. The fully solar-powered location, on a working winery, is the first Huttopia to be completely off the grid.
Much like the Dutton family spread in the hit show Yellowstone, the just-opened 11th Under Canvas North Yellowstone–Paradise Valley sits on ranch land near the north gate of Yellowstone National Park. Guests can expect low-impact tents, unrivaled park access, and plenty of s’mores.
