What I Packed for a Two-Week Trip to Georgetown, Guyana

This past spring, my inner anxious-planner took full control. I devoted a lot of time to meticulously reviewing my summer calendar and all I saw were back-to-back trips. However, I realized that there was little family time set aside. I quickly hopped on my Chase Travel app and booked a roundtrip ticket to Guyana to be with my loved ones. I venture to Georgetown, Guyana, twice a year to not only spend quality time with family, but also immerse myself in our rich and vibrant diverse culture that holds a special place in my heart. Relaxing in a hammock, surrendering to the tropical weather, enjoying the fresh fruit, and savoring all the curry dishes possible are the highlights of my visits. With a two-week stay planned, I celebrated my birthday and indulged in delicious mango that I picked right from my auntie’s backyard. This time around, the weather greeted me with some spicy heat—meaning morning showers and steamy afternoons. Here are the essentials I packed that helped me have the perfect stay in Guyana.

Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen

Safeguarding your skin under the sun in Guyana is essential—I’m always fully stocked with Supergoop Unseen sunscreen on my visits. It’s suitable for all skin tones, invisible when applied, and can be easily incorporated into any skincare routine. It’s just—comfortable!

Adidas Stan Smith sneaker

I love a white sneaker and I never travel without one. The Adidas Stan Smith is so versatile—I wear them for a walk around town as easily as I do to dinner with friends and family at a local restaurant. It’s important to have a pair of shoes that withstand the demands of traveling and this is always my go-to option.

A yellow trunk.

Todd Sanfield Swim Trunk

The Todd Sanfield trunk was the perfect swimwear addition to my carry-on for this trip. Whether I was swimming in the lush interior of Guyana or hanging poolside at one of the many hotels in Georgetown, I was glad to have this pair. This well-designed trunk comes in a variety of colors and patterns—the lemon option I purchased added a vibrant touch to my style. The material is impeccable: quick-drying, comfortable, and just the right length. And an added bonus, it also functions as a great workout short for the gym.

A bag.

Bric’s Excursion Travel Bag

I prefer to travel light and the X-Bag Excursion backpack is the perfect companion to encourage just that. There is ample space for all of my essential carry-on items, including my laptop. Among its many convenient compartments, my favorite is the interior zip pocket to store valuables like my passport. Its functionality and compact design allows this backpack to also serve as my day-to-day bag during activities while I’m there.

Sunday Riley C.E.O Glow vitamin c & tumeric face oil

Many things take pause when I travel, but my skincare does not. Sunday Riley’s C.E.O Glow Vitamin C + Turmeric Oil is an essential step in my daily routine. Prior to using, I had dry skin and hyperpigmentation, now my skin is a lot more even and bright—a major confidence booster while I travel.

A hat.

Madewell Colorblock Baseball Cap

Wearing a cap is a smart choice, especially in a location like Guyana, where the sun can be intense due to its proximity to the equator. I was pleased with this Madewell baseball cap: It features a contrast-colored brim, available in Summer Breeze and Studio Mauva, and an adjustable back strap. It’s just as functional as it is stylish.

Mosquito repellent.

Repel Lemon Eucalyptus Mosquito Repellent

When traveling to Guyana, you will need an effective mosquito repellent. Repel Lemon Eucalyptus Repellent is an excellent choice. This natural repellent lasts for up to six hours, is non-greasy, and smells good—a win!

Where I stayed:

During this trip to Guyana, I stayed at the Sleepin Hotel & Casino, situated in the heart of Georgetown. I primarily chose the Sleepin Hotel & Casino due to its central location; it was a short drive to shopping, restaurants, and local attractions. Once I finished my day of exploring and visiting family, I was able to recharge and relax at the hotel, enjoying the incredible pool and bar. Being close to family was my top priority when choosing my stay, which allowed for quality time together, making my trip even more meaningful and special.
