The World’s 50 Best Restaurants named a brand new winner in Valencia this week. The annual awards ceremony, which celebrates all of the world’s finest eateries, took place on Tuesday, June 20—and Central in Lima, Peru was named as the winner. The list is decided by a panel of experts, and there are a few rules: those on the panel can’t vote for any restaurant they have an economic interest in, and they must have eaten at restaurants that win their votes in the previous 19 months.
It’s also important to note that a restaurant which has previously bagged the top spot cannot win for a second time. Instead, previous winners move onto the ‘Best of the Best’ list, which includes Noma, Osteria Francescana, and Mirazur. This means that the 2022 winner, Geranium, took its place on the ‘Best of the Best’ list–making way for Central to claim the top spot.
Some other notable prizes were also announced. These include the Resy One To Watch Award 2023, won by Kwame Onwuachi’s New York spot Tatiana and The World’s Best Female Chef 2023, named this year as Elena Reygadas of Rosetta in Mexico City. The 2023 Icon Award has been given to Basque chef Andoni Luis Aduriz. The World’s Best Pastry Chef’s Award went to Pia Salazar, pastry chef at Nuema in Quito, Ecuador. The Estrella Damm Chefs’ Choice Award went to Odette’s Julien Royer, who cooks in Singapore.
