Santa Barbara is, at its core, a beach town, so start with the ocean. East Beach is the largest and most iconic, while Butterfly Beach, tucked beside Montecito’s Coral Casino, offers a quieter stretch of sand. Hendry’s Beach is the go-to for dog lovers and sunset views, and Mesa Lane is a secluded, local favorite. If you have the time, look into a boat rental to enjoy a view of the city from the water.
First-timers should head to the Santa Barbara County Courthouse and climb the tiled stairs to the top for sweeping views over the city. If you’re up for more climbing, nearby hikes like Hot Springs (bring a swimsuit) and Inspiration Point are some of the best. Or keep it easy with a bike ride, cruising slowly along the coastline. Don’t skip a walk along Stearns Wharf.
Santa Barbara’s food scene is also having a moment, with several new openings in the past year. Make time for Barbareño along with newer standouts like Little Mountain, Montes, Dom’s Taverna, and Manifattura. For something more casual, Shoreline Café offers tables in the sand while Dune Coffee has some of the best brew in town. McConnell’s is the stop for ice cream (their location on Upper State Street has long been a celebrity favorite).
For a night out, head to the Funk Zone for wine, beer, and gallery hopping, or wander State Street for a livelier mix of shops, restaurants, and music. If you have time, venture inland to the Santa Ynez Valley and experience Central Coast wine country, a more relaxed, intimate alternative to Napa or Sonoma.
