The Dean’s Office of Academic Affairs in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Career Development Specialist.

About the Opportunity

The Career Development Specialist will perform a wide range of career counseling to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as programming, instruction, employer relations, and administrative functions within the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. This will include, but is not limited to, 1:1 and group career counseling, creating networking events, presenting workshops, and building relationships with potential employers and internship sites. This staff member will work primarily with students in specified Eberly majors.

What You’ll Do

Career Advising

  • Counsel undergraduate and graduate students, and recent alumni, regarding career decision-making, experiential learning opportunities, full-time professional job search strategies, graduate and professional school, and career/life planning.
  • Effectively support students through all phases of career exploration and decision making by providing personalized, developmentally appropriate counseling.
  • Manage relationships with Eberly’s academic programs within specific, designated academic areas and career pathways.
  • Connect academic programs to different career pathways.
  • Meet with students, in person and virtually, from designated academic areas through group setting, individual appointments, and drop-in hours.
  • Review resumes, cover letters, and other professional documents (in person and electronically) and provide highly tailored feedback.
  • Conduct mock interviews.
  • Collect student feedback and perform assessments in these areas in order to identify areas of development and best practices.
  • Maintain vanity account dedicated to career services in the Eberly College.

Instructing Career Development Courses for Academic Credit

  • Under the direction of Ebelry’s Director of Advising, design new curricula for career and professional development courses, for both major and industry specific audiences.
  • Instruct courses as assigned by supervisor
  • Consult industry representatives, including campus recruiting contacts, to ensure accuracy and efficacy of the content, particularly as it pertains to a targeted discipline or industry.
  • Facilitate guest speakers, including representatives from key employer partners and/or alumni

Employer Relations

  • Develop and maintain relationships with employers related to the designated academic areas.
  • Identify new internship and job shadowing opportunities for Eberly’s undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Work with employers to coordinate job shadowing experiences.
  • Work to identify new employers.
  • Create and maintain a database of employers.
  • Solicit student feedback from employers.
  • Work with departmental internship coordinators to identify ways in which to collaborate and support their efforts.
  • Participate in site visits, campus meetings/events, and career fairs.
  • Identify alumni – employer network.

Academic Program and Student Support in Areas of Recruitment and Retention

  • Work with Eberly’s 191 instructors and visit 191 courses to share information about career support within the Eberly College.
  • Offer support with career content Eberly’s ARCS courses
  • Serve as a resource for faculty working to better integrate career readiness into their courses and programs.
  • Meet with key constituent groups (e.g. academic advisors) to identify areas of need based upon their input.
  • Develop content to supplement advisor resources, including the Eberly Advising Newsletter
  • Participate in and develop new materials for Eberly Connect workshop series for first-year students.
  • Coordinate with other offices dedicated to academic support services including, but not limited to, the Pre Health Office, ASPIRE, and the Purpose Center
  • Participate in the recruitment events that the College is asked to participate in by UR/EM.

Office Operations and Administrative Duties

  • Assist with office daily functions as needed, including emails, phone calls, staff meetings, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in counseling, business, human resources, marketing, public relations, education, or related field
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience involving career counseling and/or human resources or related work.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience teaching, presenting, or public speaking.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to foster positive relationships with multiple diverse professional constituencies.
  • Familiarity with NACE competencies and best practices.
  • Ability to use DegreeWorks and Navigate as needed.
  • Ability to learn about Eberly’s wide array of majors and the various career paths associated with them.
  • Ability to articulate the value of the liberal arts degree.
  • Demonstrated record in project management.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Highly developed public speaking skills.
  • Knowledge of career development theories.
  • Knowledge of campus-wide career development resources, including Handshake.
  • Proven self-starter
