Description
The University of Montana invites applications for an Assistant Dean of Career Development for the Alexander Blewett III School of Law. This position provides strategic leadership for the Career Development Office, overseeing programs and services that support student and alumni career success. Key responsibilities include career counseling, employer outreach, bar exam advising, and ensuring compliance with ABA and NALP reporting requirements. The Assistant Dean plays a critical role in advancing employment outcomes and strengthening connections between the law school and the legal profession. Anticipated start date July 27, 2026.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide career counseling, job search guidance, and professional development programming for students and alumni.
- Coach students and alumni on all aspects of the job search process, including interview preparation and employment strategies.
- Develop and deliver classes and workshops to support students in securing legal employment.
- Build and maintain relationships with employers, alumni, and members of the legal community.
- Oversee job placement initiatives, including on-campus interviews and judicial clerkship advising.
- Advise students on bar exam requirements and support bar preparation and success efforts.
- Supervise student organizations and promote community engagement.
- Manage career development resources, reporting, and compliance with accreditation standards.
- Lead financial education programming, wellness initiatives, and special projects.
Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school.
- General knowledge of legal career opportunities in Montana and nationally.
- Familiarity with legal resume development and application materials.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Strong oral communication and public speaking abilities.
- Ability to work effectively one-on-one with law students.
- Ability to collaborate collegially with staff, faculty, and members of the Montana State Bar.
- Demonstrated professionalism, including courtesy, cooperation, and sensitivity in working with others.
- Proficiency with personal computers, web-based applications, and word processing software.
- Ability to become a member of the State Bar of Montana.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate of the Alexander Blewett III School of Law at the University of Montana.
- Familiarity with the Montana legal community.
- Prior experience in career counseling, recruiting, or hiring.
- Experience working with law students or training early-career attorneys.
Additional Information
