Associate Director, Career Education – Science & Technology Careers


The award-winning Malone Center for Career Engagement is committed to providing leading-edge career preparation and employment/graduate
school connections. The team is dedicated to collaborating with each other, in addition to partnering with campus and external stakeholders
to provide best-in-class career support to our students. This position will focus on building an ecosystem of career support for students
interested in exploring and securing internships, full-time employment, and graduate school opportunities in science, technology and related
careers through individual career coaching, curated resources and programming, and employer/graduate school connections. The successful
candidate must be student-centered, have demonstrated proficiency in building effective relationships, and experience or background in
science or technology. This position reports to the Director of Career Education.

Job Description:

Individual
Coaching

  • Serve as an industry expert for science and technology careers with a focus on careers in
    artificial intelligence,
    biology, chemistry, computer science, data science, physics, earth, environmental and sustainability sciences, and
    scientific research. Stay
    up to date on industry trends, hiring timelines, and recruiting practices.
  • Provide one-on-one career
    coaching for students and
    early career alumni who have expressed an interest in exploring and preparing for careers in science and
    technology fields. Career coaching
    topics include career exploration, resume writing, interview preparation, networking, internships, job
    search strategies, and graduate
    school applications.
  • Maintain a caseload of students with career interests in the sciences and
    technology. Track student
    engagements and internship/employment/graduate school outcomes.

Programming & Resources

  • Develop content and
    deliver presentations on a variety of career topics such as resumes, networking, interview
    preparation, internships, job search strategies
    and graduate school applications.
  • Create and maintain curated resources for
    students interested in science and technology
    fields.
  • In collaboration with Associate Director of Employer Engagement and
    Associate Director of Networking and Alumni
    Connections, organize programming including industry-specific networking events, career treks,
    alumni panels, and class speakers to
    facilitate connections between students and alumni, employers, and graduate programs in the sciences
    and technology.
  • In
    collaboration with the Director of Internships, update existing and add new science and technology internship
    listings to Furman’s
    Internship Database. Review and vet new internships to ensure they meet the University’s high impact guidelines.
  • Support the
    Summer Internship Fellowship process including reviewing student applications and reading/monitoring the weekly Moodle
    reflections for
    Summer Intern Fellows who are interning in the science, technology, and related fields.

Relationship
Development &
Engagement

  • Develop and maintain relationships with employers, alumni, parents, and graduate programs for
    advising,
    networking, programming, and other career education purposes.
  • Maintain warm contact list of “industry-experts” comprised
    of alumni
    and professionals in science and technology who are willing to connect with students for career conversations.
  • Establish
    relationships with faculty in relevant departments to gain understanding of curriculum and competencies developed by majors and to provide
    industry-specific insight to faculty.
  • Engage with prospective students and their parents about the support Furman provides to
    students interested in pursuing careers in science and technology fields and communicate the career outcomes of Furman graduates working in
    these fields. Participate in Admissions programming such as Fall for Furman and Furman Forward.

Cross-Functional Teams
and
University Initiatives

  • Contribute to the Malone Center’s strategic planning process and support the strategic
    priorities of
    the Malone Center for Career Engagement.
  • Support Malone Center signature programs/resources including Career &
    Internship
    Fairs, Beyond the Bell Tower, and Furman Career Guide.
  • Support the University’s strategic goal of ensuring 100% of
    students
    participate in engaged learning experiences and 90% of graduates are employed or enrolled in a graduate program at graduation.

  • Represent the Division of Academic Affairs on university committees.
  • Represent Furman University at local and national
    professional associations and conferences to stay current with industry standards and network with professionals in the field.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Career Education in support of the goals and objectives of the Division of Academic
    Affairs and Malone Center for Career Engagement

Requirements

  • Master’s degree required; preferably
    in
    science/technology related field, higher education administration, or student affairs.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant
    experience
    advising college students ideally in a college career center setting and/or working in the field of science or technology
    strongly
    preferred.
  • Proven proficiency in cultivating productive and effective relationships with stakeholders including students,
    faculty,
    employers, parents, and alumni.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate information clearly and
    effectively
    to internal and external audiences.
  • Adept at designing and facilitating educational/professional development workshops
    –
    comfortable presenting to groups.
  • Proficient and comfortable with technology. Preferred experience utilizing Career Management
    Platforms, like Handshake, GradLeaders and PeopleGrove.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented working style.
  • Proactive problem
    solver, able to balance and prioritize multiple projects at once.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster inclusive and welcoming spaces
    for students from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • This position offers a limited flexible and hybrid work schedule that
    aligns with the Malone Center’s business needs. As a student-facing position, this position requires the staff member to primarily be
    in-person and on-campus.
