The Director of Career and Residency Advising serves as the strategic architect and visionary leader for all career and residency advising services for the University of Pikeville – Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine. Tasked with supporting osteopathic medical students throughout their entire four-year educational journey, the Director designs the roadmap for professional development, career exploration, competitiveness assessment, and the high-stakes navigation of the residency match process.
Responsibilities:
- Design and implement a multi-year career planning roadmap, including interactive Canvas modules and structured advising guides.
- Individualized Student Support: Provide guidance on career paths, rotations selection and application processes, specialty selection, residency competitiveness, and “Plan B” profession trajectories.
- Stay at the forefront of medical education trends, ensuring students are prepared for the evolving landscape of the residency match process to maximize student placement success.
- Oversee the residency match cycle, including ERAS token issuance and eligibility verification for the NRMP and other match programs.
- Lead the review process for CVs and personal statements; coordinate high-impact mock interviews to ensure student readiness.
- Coordinate mission-critical support during Match Week and the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP).
- Ensure full compliance with institutional, accreditation, and external regulatory standards.
- Assess and report on the effectiveness of advising programs to drive continuous improvement.
- Participate in institutional activities and events such as Orientation, White Coat Ceremony, and Commencement activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Education, Student Affairs, or a related field; Master’s degree strongly preferred.
- Supervisory or management role is highly desirable.
- Career advising; particularly in a health professions program, is strongly preferred.
- An understanding of medical education, higher education administration, or student success frameworks will be prioritized.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and digital collaboration tools (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.).
- Experience with Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas) is a plus.
- Ability to manage complex timelines, verify eligibility data, and maintain accurate records for ERAS and residency match services such as NRMP.
- An understanding of medical education, higher education administration, or student success frameworks is highly desirable.
- Strong organizational and administrative skills with an eye for detail and accuracy.
- A commitment to providing high-quality services to students, ensuring they feel supported and informed.
- The capacity to manage a diverse workflow that serves students at every stage of their medical education and to successfully pivot between short-term, mission-critical deadlines (such as the Match and SOAP) and the longitudinal, multi-year advising strategies required to prepare first- and second-year students for their future careers.
- The ability to work seamlessly as both an independent leader and a collaborative team member.
- Proven ability to handle sensitive information with the highest level of confidentiality and professional integrity.
