Renpho Active Massage Gun Review: A Must-Have for Soothing Travel Aches and Pains

Last winter, last-minute holiday shopping had me scurrying to find a couple more gifts for loved ones—useful ones that wouldn’t be buried in the storage closet come January. Lo and behold, an impromptu Costco run placed me right in front of the perfect find: a dwindling display of massage guns. Desperate to get in and out of the store quickly, I tossed one into my shopping cart and merrily checked a giftee off my list. Clearly, I made the right choice, as the gift’s recipients couldn’t stop singing its praises after unboxing and giving it a whirl. Their rave review had me itching for one of my own—and once I finally acquired one, I understood what all the hype was about.

I often get stiff arms and legs during long-distance road trips, so the massager has become a welcomed addition to my packing list; it wastes no time in relaxing muscle tightness. I’ve experienced instant neck and back relief after using it to target hard-to-reach areas—exactly why I’m excited to bring it on flights, and put it to use if and when I get a crick in my neck after sleeping incorrectly, or a sore back from slouching in my seat. With hotel and Airbnb beds, you never quite know what you’re going to get—most are delightful, but some are a pain in the rear. My Renpho R3 Active Massage Gun hits all the right spots in times of discomfort.

The portable percussion massager, lightweight enough to tuck away in my carry-on, aggressively goes to war on sore spots and spasms as soon as I power that baby up. When my body gives out on me during a long flight, road trip, or vacation—sore muscles and leg cramps are common—I can whip it out. It’s come to my rescue after getting a stiff back from hauling heavy luggage through the airport, sitting uncomfortably for hours on a cramped economy flight, and driving lengthy distances with barely any leg room. I’ve discovered that it’s a mighty defense against discomfort while away, and so now, I can’t travel without it.

My massage gun is advertised as one that “delivers pre-post workout relaxation” on Renpho’s site, and while it’d be great for athletes or active travelers, for me, it’s a fierce travel companion that offers on-the-go comfort and relief. Nestled snugly inside the sturdy case it came with, it squeezes neatly in between my other belongings.

Renpho Active massage gun

Weight: 1.5 pounds
Dimensions: 7.3″ x 5.8″ x 2.3″

Equipped with a battery life that lasts for hours, five adjustable speeds, and five different massage heads, I feel battle-ready well before using it to knock out painful knots and kinks. Noise levels can get a little loud depending on intensity, but even the lowest intensity level can provide a decent deep-tissue massage without disturbing the peace.

Renpho’s site describes it as “a great entry-level massage gun” that “is portable but offers a similar output of percussion as the advanced model with thermal and cool plates to soothe the body.” In other words, it’s a powerful machine that’s delivered in a petite package—compact, easy to use, and it gives one heck of a deep-tissue massage.

Other massage guns we recommend

If you’re not feeling this particular massage gun, you’ve still got plenty of options. One of these travel-friendly percussion massagers may be more your speed.

TheraGun Mini

TheraGun Mini

With tons of online buzz and a compact size, I can see why the Theragun Mini made Oprah’s Favorite Things 2022 list. At 5.55″ x 4.92″ x 1.93″, the massage gun is compact enough to fit into a large purse or backpack. It also features three speeds, comes with three attachments, and is Bluetooth-compatible; owners can find pain relief–promoting wellness routines on Therabody’s app.

Hyperice Hypervolt Go 2

Hyperice Hypervolt Go 2

Dubbed a travel essential by reviewers and Traveler editors alike, I had to include Hyperice’s mini massage gun model on the list. The ultra-portable device is said to be a “silent painkiller” with its QuietGlide technology, and features three percussion speeds and two attachments. At 1.5 pounds, it’s the same weight as Renpho’s Active massage gun.

Toloco Massage Gun Mini

I’m mostly intrigued by the design of this mini massage gun. The base reminds me of those thermal cups you use for soup and coffee, so I can only assume that it’s easy to carry around. The lightweight massager comes with just four attachments but features a total of six built-in speeds—it is small but mighty.

Homedics Therapist Select Percussion Massager

This percussion massager is backed with a 30-day guarantee, and based on what I’ve heard about it from friends and read in reviews, it’s well worth the investment and is like having your own little massage therapist. The device features three intensity levels and comes with four attachments.
