Tributes have been paid to former Aviva UK and Ireland chief executive David Barral, who has died following a car accident near Leeds. He was 63.
Aviva confirmed his death in a statement, saying: “We are very sad to hear of the death of David Barral, a much-valued former colleague and leader at Aviva. Our deepest condolences and prayers go to David’s family at this time.”
Barral was described by former colleagues as a personable and forward-thinking leader who combined strong business discipline with a genuine interest in people.
He began his insurance career at Norwich Union in 1999, before the company rebranded as Aviva, and was appointed chief executive of Aviva UK & Ireland in 2011, a role he held until 2015.
Over a career spanning more than three decades, he held several senior positions across the financial services and investment sectors.
According to police, Barral’s Aston Martin DBX left the A58 Leeds Road, collided with a tree and caught fire. Emergency crews attended, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
At the time of the crash, Barral was working as a strategic adviser at Harwood Capital. His family described his death as “a devastating loss”.
Nucleus Financial Services paid tribute, saying: “We’re saddened to hear of the passing of David Barral, who served as both non-executive chairman and CEO of Curtis Banks. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go to his family and friends from all those who worked with him.”
Others from across the industry also shared their memories and condolences.
Duncan R Glassey, partner at AAB Wealth, said: “I’ve just heard the sad news of the passing of my first boss in financial services. At just 21, he took a risk on me, placing me on the graduate recruitment programme. He was a superstar manager, the best boss and mentor I’ve ever had, and gave me the best training of my career. I’m truly gutted he’s gone. His impact on my life and career was profound, and I’ll always be grateful.”
Derek McCulloch added: “David was a genuinely inspirational and likeable family man. He will be missed by all who knew him. Such a tragic loss.”
