Do YOU have ‘tipping torment’ when abroad? Half of holidaymakers fear awkward faux pas

Awkward? While tipping is essential in countries such as the US, not all places have the same attitude - which can be confusing for tourists

Almost half of holidaymakers are not confident about tipping restaurant staff or taxi drivers when abroad, new research reveals.

Some 46 per cent of adults battle so-called ‘tipping torment’ when it comes to gratuities as they fear an awkward holiday faux pas, data from trade association ABTA shows.

Just 7 per cent of travellers are ‘very confident’ about a country’s tipping culture and always know what is expected.

Holidaymakers travelling to long-haul destinations are the most unsure, the research suggests.

Some 64 per cent of travellers to the United Arab Emirates are not confident when tipping here. Gratuities of 10 to 15 per cent are generally expected in restaurants, taxis and hotels.

In Japan, 57 per cent are unsure. Tipping isn’t customary in Japan and can even be considered impolite.

Meanwhile even travellers to Britain’s holiday favourites such as Germany, Portugal and Spain are not confident with some 41 per cent, 40 per cent and 37 per cent unsure about the tipping culture.

In Greece it’s 40 per cent, 37 per cent in France while for Italy 38 per cent of visitors are unsure.

Travellers to these destinations are not obligated to tip but rounding up a bill or leaving 5 to 10 per cent in restaurants is typical.

Visitors to France will find service charge is typically included in their bill but it is still polite to leave small change or round up for good service.

In Greece a generous 10 to 15 per cent is expected.

Graeme Buck, director of communications at ABTA, said: ‘Tipping practices vary widely around the world, so it’s no surprise many holidaymakers feel unsure.

‘In some countries, like the US, tipping is essential, while in others, like Japan, it’s not expected at all.

‘A little preparation before you travel can help you feel more confident and avoid awkward situations’

Research the local customs before you travel and check the typical amounts you should be paying.

Cash is king in many parts of the world and is preferred for some services like taxis, so it’s wise to carry local currency with you.
