The Best Restaurants in Milwaukee for Midwestern Hospitality and Fantastic Flavors

Milwaukee dining has never been better. Its scene has been fueled by the bounty of Wisconsin’s agriculture, its world-class cheesemakers, and chefs whose zealous creativity continues to raise the bar. But it’s currently at a unique inflection point, with a wave of new restaurants providing a welcome complement to the city’s long-standing institutions. The result is a dining culture that feels both deeply rooted and newly energized.

Lori Fredrich

Lori Fredrich is a food writer based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Born and raised in the Cream City, she has tried to leave many times, but seems to be drawn to this quirky city that smells of beer and alewives. She is the Senior Food & Dining Writer for OnMilwaukee and the co-host of FoodCrush, a podcast “for people who eat.” Her newest book, Field to Fork: Farm Fresh Recipes from the Dairy State was released in October of 2023. Lori is also the author of Milwaukee Food: A History of Cream City Cuisine (History Press).
She has developed recipes for entities including the Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin and the American Butter Institute. Her recipes and writing have also been featured in a variety of publications including Cheese Connoisseur, Cooking Light, Edible Milwaukee, Milwaukee Magazine, and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, among others.

There are a few golden rules of Milwaukee restaurant culture, which hold true wherever you dine. Vibes can make or break a restaurant, and, as a Midwestern city, we believe hospitality is key. The modus operandi here is thoughtful service without pretense, and that extends to a new generation of restaurateurs who are increasingly redefining what Milwaukee food can be, while honoring the traditions that shaped them. Under their influence, global flavors are woven seamlessly with locally grown ingredients, reflecting both the city’s diversity and its strong sense of place, in a setting you’ll feel at home in.

What likewise sets Milwaukee dining apart is its accessibility. Meals here rival those in larger cities, but navigability and affordability encourage exploration, offering visitors a chance to taste their way through multi-course menus and hidden gems alike. Our list of the best restaurants in Milwaukee highlights eateries that locals return to again and again, places where the food is exceptional, the atmosphere is welcoming–and where the stories behind each dish are well worth hearing. Some are new, others are up-and-coming, and a few have already become neighborhood favorites. What they share: Each brings something distinct to the table, and all are essential to understanding Milwaukee dining right now.

The chawanmushi, an egg custard in this case featuring lobster meat and topped with roe, at 1033 Omakase is a seasonal favorite.

1033 Omakase

1033 S. 1st St., Milwaukee, WI

For those who appreciate cuisine executed with creativity, precision, and a touch of drama, 1033 offers a can’t-miss omakase. The catch? It’s tricky to score a reservation at what has quickly become one of the hottest tickets in the city. The intimate, chef-driven dining experience offers 12–14 meticulously crafted courses using high-quality seasonal ingredients. Think: chawanmushi, tuna tartare, Bafun uni, cod milt or nigiri, temaki or house-aged fish. Service is intimate, but the vibe is anything but stuffy. Every seating unfolds to a soundtrack of 90s hip-hop, an unexpected but perfect counterpoint that keeps the room relaxed, energetic, and quietly joyful.

The bagels here are New York-style, with crisp crusts and chewy interiors. The schmears are also housemade.
