Airbnbs on Maui—when done right—provide a home base from which you can connect with the surrounding nature, sample island-grown eats, and actually slow down long enough to feel the magic that makes this island so special. And while choosing Maui is a no-brainer, it’s settling on where to stay that’s the hard part. Lucky for me, I’ve lived on the neighboring island of Oahu for more than 20 years, so I’ve had plenty of chances to explore the exceptional vacation rentals in Maui. Each time I visit, I make it a point to experience a different side of the island by trying new-to-me activities, accommodations, and restaurants. But if you’ve only got one shot to plan your perfect Maui trip, choose your Airbnb based on what you most hope to get out of your travels. If your priority is spa treatments and resort pampering, then a coastal condo on the west or southwest side of Maui is your best bet. If a countryside escape, surf holiday, or romantic retreat is more your speed, consider an Upcountry cabin, a standalone home on the North Shore, or a bungalow on the famed Road to Hana.
At this time, while headed to Maui, remember to avoid Airbnbs in Lahaina for now (due to the housing shortage caused by the 2023 wildfires and the recent floods), and be respectful of the environment and community you stay in. When done right, an ethical stay in Maui can include seeing sea turtles come ashore just steps from your door in Paia, learning about the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) life while overnighting in Makawao, or plucking tropical fruits for breakfast on an organic farm in Hana.
