Position Summary

The Director of Career Services supports learning through a comprehensive career services program encompassing the following areas: employer relations, career counseling, job search assistance (resume writing, cover letter writing, interviewing skills, identifying job leads, and using social media, etc.), graduate school counseling and information, internship assistance, and other areas related to career success. This person will collaborate with multiple internal constituents to promote the career development of students. The Director is a pivotal and highly visible individual, working closely and collaboratively with faculty, staff, and alumni to expand possibilities for student learning, leadership, and employment. The Director of Career Services reports to the AVP Enrollment Management.

Description of Job Duties

  • Develop and maintain employer outreach to increase the number and quality of employers, and job and internship opportunities for students and alumni.
  • Grow and cultivate relationships with existing employer contacts, key campus stakeholders, and new external corporate partners. Oversee and monitor the development and retention of relationships with employers for the purpose of externships/internships and job placement of graduates.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of an effective employer relationship program; participate in development efforts with regional and national companies through site visits and marketing.
  • Develop and oversee experiential learning opportunities, specifically internships.

Student Programming

Description of Job Duties

  • Develop, coordinate, market, and facilitate training and skill development workshops to include resume preparation, job-search strategies, and career information technology including interview skills and experiential learning preparation.
  • Develop, coordinate, and facilitate all University of the Incarnate Word career fairs.
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies to recruit and promote awareness of career services events, and programs and services, including creating publications, managing social media, and updating the website.
  • Collaborate with the Brainpower Connections program to develop and facilitate career explorations programming and events for K-12 Brainpower school students.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Admissions and First Year Experience office to develop and facilitate career programming designed to engage new students in skill development at time of paid confirmation. Participate in new student orientations and summer engagement activities for new students.
  • Advise students and alumni with individualized assistance in defining career options, developing employment skills, and job-search strategies.
  • Strategically leverage technology to expand online resources for all career-related opportunities.

Description of Job Duties

  • Execute the collection and reporting of first destination survey outcomes and other data related to institutional effectiveness of employment outcomes for graduates.
  • Execute the collection and reporting of placement data for internship opportunities and placement.
  • Continuously survey graduates and employers to collect data to assess whether programs are meeting the needs of employers and the current job market.
  • Collaborate with the Division of Development and University Relations to identify corporate partnerships and development opportunities to support internship and employment initiatives and programs.

Description of Job Duties

  • Coordinate college specific outreach, programming and customized seminars, workshops, and programs based on student needs assessment and faculty requests.
  • Collaborate and assist faculty teaching first-year seminar courses to incorporate career programming into course curriculum.
  • Work with and advise faculty and university administrators on methods to enhance the quality of experiential learning/career development and to expand departmental participation.

  • Create, collaborate, and execute a strategic plan for the role of career development to include the development and implementation of long-term strategic plans, short-term operational plans that are all in alignment with overall university strategic priorities.
  • Manage career services staff including administrative meetings, trainings, and professional development.
  • Engage in professional associations and community activities to promote the objectives of the Career Services department.
  • Manage and oversee departmental budget and create revenue generating opportunities.
  • Develop and implement effective assessment and program evaluation methods.
  • Represent the University of the Incarnate Word at various corporate functions to gain exposure in the greater San Antonio community.
  • Perform other Duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Strong background in student development.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to motivate and assist students in developing long-term goals and coordinate this effort with faculty, staff, alumni, and recruiters.
  • Exceptional organization, planning, supervisory, and interpersonal skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of career counseling techniques, career development theory, and job search strategies.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.

Required Education

Bachelor’s Degree.

Required Work Experience

  • Six (6) years of progressively responsible student support experience in higher education to include at least three (3) years of experience in Career Development.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory responsibilities in relevant field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree.
  • Five (5) years of experience in Career Services in higher education.
  • Bilingual in the Spanish language.

Work Hours

Typical Monday through Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm with occasional extended hours/weekends to meet departmental needs and/or needs of the learning community.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift up to 30lbs for table set-up/tear-down at events OR of event materials.
  • Ability to reach overhead, bend, and squat to retrieve event materials.
  • Ability to push/pull event carts holding up to 50lbs.
  • Ability to actively engage in events for extended periods of time. Ability to regularly move about campus and event venues to actively engage faculty, staff, and current students, as well as attend meetings on and off campus.
