Position Overview:

The Assistant Director of Student Employment contributes to the overall mission of Carleton College by leading student employment function within the Career Center, which includes but is not limited to supporting the collection and posting of student employment positions, designing and delivering professional development for student staff supervisors and student employees, and reporting on student employment activities and student learning outcomes. The Assistant Director ensures seamless integration of student employment into the Carleton experience and helps to ensure that the nearly 80% of Carleton students who participate in student employment are prepared to leverage their experience toward their post-collegiate goals.

The Assistant Direct reports to the Director of the Carleton Career Center and serves as a member of the Career Center’s leadership team, providing direct supervision to the staff assigned to the student employment functional area. The Assistant Director will collaborate closely with other campus offices including the Student Work Coordinator within Financial Aid and Human Resources to provide a robust and valuable student employment experience.

Compensation:

The expected starting salary range for this position is between $75,800 and $78,400. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.

Program management and Student Employment Operations:

In consultation with the Director of the Career Center, Director of Student Financial Aid, and Human Resources, the Assistant Director will:

  • Benchmark, design, and oversee the implementation of Carleton’s Student Employment program in alignment with college policies and applicable employment laws.
  • Oversee the collection, review, and maintenance of student employment job descriptions for all student employment positions, providing guidance to supervisors and departments as necessary to support the goal.
  • Lead the campus-wide job posting process, maintaining appropriate technology tools (e.g. Handshake, word press, Google forms) to support the process.
  • Develop opportunities to provide employer and graduate insights to the campus community, highlighting key opportunities to help students develop and translate key skills from their student employment experiences to life beyond Carleton.
  • Collaborate with Student Financial Aid to facilitate the placement of first-year students into campus roles aligned with their skills, interests, and financial aid awards.
  • Establish standards for student evaluations, working closely with campus partners to create a culture of feedback and professional growth for students and supporting supervisor training to support the evaluation process.
  • Identify, evaluate, and lead Carleton participation in any strategic programs such as Work+, Iowa Grow, or similar to ensure that Carleton student employment practices are aligned with best practices in the field of higher education.
  • Maintain accurate records for student employment and lead efforts to report on established metrics.

Student Professional Development and Programming  

  • Establish and deliver a series of student professional development resources and workshops to support students to develop career-readiness competencies aligned with NACE recommendations.
  • Oversee engagement tracking for student professional development and related career development activities to support the goals of student employment and Carleton’s Four Year Career Development Plan.

Supervision and Management:

  • Provide direct supervision to professional or student staff in the student employment functional area with a focus on team-building and development.
  • Foster a systems approach to student employment, working to integrate the work of the team such that resources and time are used intentionally and efficiently to support students and student staff supervisors.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree, plus three-five years of professional experience in a higher education or human resources setting with a preference for prior experience in student employment
  • Demonstrated experience employing strong interpersonal skills to build networks and relationships, particularly with internal constituencies
  • Experience with strategic planning or program design, including the ability to forecast needs and implement an outreach and engagement strategy
  • Experience supervising professional staff, with a commitment to developing individuals and teams
  • Proficiency with computer applications including Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and mail merge, with a preference for experience with online recruiting or personnel management platforms such as Handshake or Workday
  • Familiarity with NACE Career Competencies and strategies for fostering the development of key skills among a student population.
  • A deep interest in a liberal arts education and commitment to student life and learning

Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
